Default Security after port configure

I finally got my P2P working by using port forwarding in my router and authorizing the TCP and UDP, incoming and outgoing, port 6346 in my firewall. Now the question then is, is my computer still safe? If I have opened up port 6346 and the client is running then I should be OK because that program will be occupying the port. But what about when it's off? Will I be vulnerable to threats via the open port? Is this something I should turn on and off as I use the program?
