Default Limewire keeps shutting down

Hey I installed limewire the other day and at some point (could have been right after installation or perhaps hours later) limewire just stopped running. Didn't freeze, didn't give an error message, just disappeared from the taskbar. I started it up again, and it ran for a couple minutes then did it again.

It just keeps doing that over and over. It's getting to the point where if I don't babysit it, make sure it gets reopened every time it shuts down, I can't make good time on downloads.

I'll note that for some reason, right now it's running fine. This 15 minute stretch is the longest it's run since the problem began. I doubt it's over, I think the current stability is just a fluke.

Anyway, anybody else run into this problem or know a fix? I see the latest post in this sub-forum was a month ago, so I'm not too optimistic vis a vis expecting a response. But a couple of you browse through here, so maybe not all hope is lost...

Two things I can think of. Make sure both Java and LW are running with Administrator permissions. For example, search for java.exe, right-click it & get properties & choose Compatibility tab, go down to the Privilege Level & check the option for Run this program as an administrator.

Something else you could try is changing LW's compatibility mode to another Windows version. You'd need to find the actual LimeWire.exe program in the programs folder to do that. If you use LimeStart then that is not LW itself it only opens LW.

If that does not work, then do a clean install of LW. ie: delete the settings also with exception of the downloads.dat file which is found in the LW preferences folder. Return the downloads.dat file after first opening of LW, but ONLY whilst LW is closed.

Seems your version of LW's media player does not support m4a properly if at all. If you have VLC installed on the computer, then how about setting VLC as the default for opening m4a files? ie: select an m4a file & choose open with, select VLC from options & make sure always open with is checked.

If that still causes problems with LW closing, then disable LW's media player. And make VLC default to open all audio types of files. Then there won't be any conflict with LW's media player. If VLC cannot play any audio file you download, you know for sure it is a dud or bad file. VLC is normally very reliable and much more so than either LW's media player or iTunes or WMP. Only question is how well VLC handles incomplete audio files. One advantage of not using LW's media player for previewing incomplete files is there is then no preview files created in the incomplete folder, which can add up in number & disk space after a time.
Using the playlists though, you'd need to work out a system for yourself. You can create playlists in LW & save the .m3u file or whatever it's called to disk then open that with VLC.

Note: just because people don't post questions here as often as they used to, does not mean someone will not try to offer suggestions of possible solutions to your problem. Forums as a whole are less popular than they were last decade. And I suspect some persons thought this forum was related to the now defunct LW company, but is totally independent and members' privacy fiercely protected.

If they are using different ports then that's ok IMHO. However, they will drain your system resources. Another hidden effect is any pinging done upon each one via anti-file-sharing companies. That constant pinging effect may cause you to lose internet connection when running 3 p2p apps at once. The 3 apps are all java apps and all based on LW code, well at least originally. Java is not super memory efficient and often has memory leaks. Meaning a lot of memory & VM is used some of which should have been released at some point. LW has long been known to have memory leaks, sometimes less than other times. An example of a memory leak is where memory is stored temporarily into virtual memory on the disk, and despite a request to have that portion of the memory cleared because it has become irrelevant/redundant, the information is not cleared after all and instead builds on top of what was there. LPE suffers greatly with memory leaks unfortunately.

Hey thanks for the advice. Currently, Limewire is running better than before; it'll run for 5-25 minutes at a time. So for now I'm just gonna see how it goes and play it by ear, if it starts shutting down as quickly as before then I'll try your fixes.

Again, thank you a lot. I was worried this dead old forum wouldn't get me any replies but I guess I was wrong.

Thanks again.

I am getting "Windows cannot find Limestart1.exe" all of a sudden. The only thing I have done new this week I can think of is update "RealPlayer".
Any suggestions?

Uninstall LimeStart via Add/Remove control panel then reinstall it.
Sounds like you are either using a specialised Limstart from middle of year or an early version. The last 'Standard' LimeStart version should only have a single exe called LimeStart.exe

The Standard LimeStart version https://www.mediafire.com/folder/64f...for%20Java%207

BTW I use folders at some host sites so it is easier to update the files without the URL changing. Simply right-click the file & choose Download.
