Default Have Vista - Can't open Limewire!

I kind of remember with my last computer - operating system-Windows XP - that I had to disable my firewall to use Limewire. That doesn't make sense. Seems dangerous to me. I don't remember who told me to do that, maybe it's the right thing, I don't know. I just got a new computer that, of course, has Vista on it. I just downloaded Limewire. Of course, it worked fine when it asked if I wanted to run it the first time. But now I cannot open it. I haven't tried to disable firewall yet to open it because I use it for such a long period each time - it just seems too risky! Is there another thing I can do to get it to open?

I could really use some help.

If someone has already answered this question, I can't tell, because of the operating system. It's so new and different I'm not able to navigate around in it at all yet (maybe never)!

Thank you!

B.

Vista is proving to be a potential nightmare for programs created before its creation. A firewall may block downloads and uploads but it shouldn't prevent you from opening it. Visit both Limewire's website to see if there's any information on Vista and the Microsoft website to see if they have advice on using older programs, but if nothing useful is mentioned then you may just have to wait until the next version of Limewire becomes available, hopefully more Vista-compatible.

Don't disable your firewall but make sure you're only using one. I found that when I disabled Windows f/w and just used the one in my router, creating an exception for L/W, I got rid of the brick wall and it's worked fine ever since. Also if you use L/W for long periods make sure you're not sharing 100s of files as people can get caught that way.

Go to the firewall option on your control panel and see if it is blocking it. Then (if it is) let it through. Also, double check that windows defender isn't blocking it If this doesn't work, try uninstalling your current version and install it again. When you install it, a security alert will pop-up, so allow it through and it will open up while firewall is on.
Hope this helps out.

Default Don't go undoing your firewall yet!!!!

Are you able to open Limewire period? I have Vista as well and it sounds more like your Java app. Make sure you Java 5.11, not Java 6. That's what I had a problem with.

Rangerracer302,

Another post suggested uninstalling & then reinstalling Java which I did. I see I now have Java 6, update 3. Is it possible to go back to an earlier version? You think that might help?
Why is it I see Java when I go to the control panel in Vista but when I go to Start, and click on All Programs I do not see it? Shouldn't it be listed there?
I am having the exact same problem as BarbyS. Limewire worked fine for awhile and then just stopped.

What I did was I googled it and got Java 5.11. It's worth a shot, hell if it doesn't work, we can always go back to Java 6. It worked on my computer, vista. Try to uninstall all Java updates via add/remove programs in the control panel and install Java 5.11

STOP Uninstalling / disabling firewalls.... etc...

THERE IS A QUICK FIX.

Right click on the Limewire Icon on you desktop, click "Properties", go to the tab "Compatibility", check the box, "Run this program in Compatitbility mode for:" and make sure it says "Windows XP (Service Pack 2"

Now open Limewire,

works like a charm.

Are you on an Administrator User Account with Vista? There are connectivity issues if you're not.
