Question old user but new to forum/slow download speed

ok ive been using limewire for years but always with dial up.. just got new dell with vista h.b. proces:amd sempron(tm)3400+1.80 Ram 446 supposed to be 512. 32bit os and 44.9gb free of 64.4gb recoveryD 6.65gbfree of9.99gb now honestly i dont have to much of a clue what most of this means. i have a firewall: enabled limewire.. i also dont share any of my downloads due to not knowing much about anything... other than i know i want to download faster than 3kb to 6kbs.. I have in the past remember even downloading at about 20kb or atleast 10kbs but that was when i had a old comp. with 98windows/se. Now if anyone can take the time and school me on limewire and help me download music and movies faster.. I would appriciate it..ive read alot of posts but havent had any direct convos with anyone... first night on forum.... in the future i would like to know about downloading games and which ones i can.. and how to run them when finished downloading...but im sure thats a whole dif. thing.. so i think i'll take it slow.. k My names Tim and thanks upfront to whoever can help..

Well, if you've been using LW for years then you'll know that many games are infected, or won't work at all because they'll need a code or CD to run
WARNING: Viruses on the network you should be aware of
You're better off just buying the game

Download a file from here (any one will do) & see what speed you get.

If magnetmix files download very slowly, it can sometimes point to an ISP shaping bandwidth. I can't find any info about ppc...what does that stand for?

Check out this thread for tips about configuring LW.
A few things to consider while configuring Limewire for optimal performance...

Try changing ports, see if that makes any difference. In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to 64049 (or try others in the range of 49152 - 65535) > Apply > ok.

If you're determined to download games, always check the file with Bitzi before download. If other users have rated the file, you'll get some idea of it's content & quality. Might save you a few wasted downloads
How to use Bitzi
Remember to always scan downloaded files with your AV before opening them.

Grandpa has written a good guide for dialup users...check it out here
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/175733-post5.html

Don't worry about the port numbers thing, sometimes changing port numbers can help if an ISP is throttling p2p bandwidth. You don't have to change ports to that range...it's just a suggestion to help those people whose ISPs are limiting their downloads & since I didn't have any info about your ISP, I suggested it. No drama.

You'll probably find that you can allow some uploads...that 'configuring LW for optimal performance' thread will give you tips about upload bandwidth It's p2p after all, so sharing's the name of the game if at all possible (even if you only have a couple of upload slots open)! People will often download from a modem source, even if it's slow, because they really want the file you're sharing & know that modem sources are more trustworthy than some other sources!

k i understand alot that grandpa was saying about the bandwiths but he said something about setting upload to 0-1.75 and it actually wont even alow me to go lower than 1.75. and even setting it to that it might cause problems and should be lower.. speed test gave me a 5.9kb/s download and 46.3 kb/s upload lol is that normal... and should i try the port thing you sugested? or were you telling me not to worry about doing it.. i'm figuring alot of this out but still not making progress... but still thanks on the schooling birdie its appriciated...
