Default I Fixed Limewire & Vista!

I have been tearing my hair out since I got this laptop in October - my last one, brand new, with XP, was stolen from a hotel room - it was 1 month old. Anyway, I ended up with Vista because it was all I could find.

I can honestly say, I have tried EVERYTHING and NOTHING would work. Uninstalled Limewire and Kaspersky (antivirus), disabled Windows Vista security, gnutella file.........oh, the list goes on and on. I could never keep it loading long enough to even access the menu to check the settings - it would lock up requiring an ctrl-alt-del to get the program to close.

What I finally did, after waking up in the middle of the night and Limewire is where my mind went.....I wondered what version was on my XP desktop, since it worked fine....

Found the download copy I had backed up, uninstalled newest version of Limewire, removed the files in registry, and then installed the OLD VERSION OF LIMEWIRE. The one I installed is Pro - 4.10. 9 Pro.

IT'S WORKING!!!! I can't begin to tell you how many hours I've spent trying to find a solution to this. Why some people can run LW on Vista easily and others can't, I don't know, but if your head's bleeding from bashing it against the wall, try this solution and see if it works for you.

Best of luck.......

Pam

hello
I'm new here and I since have been following this thread since I joined the forum. I used the previous version with no problem, is it possible to just download and install the older version? I did not see the older version on the website I hope someone can point me to it.

I don't know where to find the older versions; can you google it? Perhaps someone still has it up on a site. I had an older version from other computers, sorry. Keep us posted if you find somewhere; if this worked for me, it can work for someone else, too, and it'd be nice to know where to get the old programs online.

Sorry I'm not of more help.

Have noticed something else, too. I had LW working fine before I left home; have been on the road since early yesterday. Tried connecting from hotel, and LW froze like it used to and I thought I'd had another false alarm as far as fixing it went.

Deleted Preferences folder, restarted compuer and LW, and it's now connecting, BUT it took a few minutes. I gave it more time because the whole program did not freeze up so that it required a ctrl/alt/del shutdown.

FWIW to anyone else who's having the same crappy time I've had with Vista and LW.

Have you tried User Cant Connect - LimeWire? It lists several connectivity solutions. Hopefully one will help you out! Good luck!

Fingers crossed, I *think* I have found what the problem was for me. That doesn't mean that I still won't have issues. I just don't think that Vista plays nice with p2p programs.
