system crash win98

my broadband modem goes offline for no apparent reason mid download.. anybody know of any conflict issues with other hard or software??? have run some basic diagnostics but no obvious system conflicts... has only started since limewire installed....
windows thinks modem is still alive and can only power up by re-booting!!!
Help please!!!
