Default Hmm, is Limewire going Bloat?

I just DLed 1.6 seeing many improvements on the former 1.4 which I think has been THE gnutellaclone.

Much to my surprise this file starts installing JAVA for win.
"Hey hey hey I already got it, oh never mind."
Installs fine then exits to windows.

Then there's no Icon to start it. Big deal. Uninstalled.

Reinstall again it installs over my Java 1.3.1.
Now an Icon, but no Connect. The window just flashes...
Hrrmpff! Uninstall.

Reinstall my own JAVA 1.3.1.
Install 1.4b, works as always but can only connect to one server at a time...duh?
Sigh...do I have to return to those other G-clones?

Oh, and between all these reinstalls I purged my registry to make sure nothing was mistakenly left there.

Now can Anyone pls tell me how to get a working 1.6.. Great program great features....doesn't work.

By the way Running W2k on an ethernet LAN I-net connect. No problems running any other I-net apps or 1.4 yesterday even....
jeez...why do ppl bother w Java in windows, isn't that just begging for problems?

A clarification:
2 problems
1) I want to be able to decide whether I want to install SUNs JAVA and where to put it. Configurable installer anyone? Modify in install -> "Main prog" (doesn't even mention JAVA1.3.1)

2)The connect seems to be broken. Tried both 1.6 and 1.6b.
I've got 1.4b working...nearly ok.
I'm going to give the standalone (w/out JAVA pack) a try but I'm no JAVA-wiz so it'll be a bit awkward I suppose.

When trying to connect Limewire doesn't even send a packet out to the net as far as my Sniffer can tell. IE in the background flounders on as usual... Is this the same Listening Port bug as I've seen on other posts?

And as you probably wonder..no, no Firewall.

I'll get back to testing

Hmmm....the Standalone run through a DOS-window seems to work as a charm connecting to several servers w/out problems except for router.limewire.com.
gnutellahosts.com wiorks well though.

Does the other client mess up JAVA-TCP/IP communication?
Does 1.6 Win and 1.6b Win default to router.limewire.com not even trying gnutellahosts.com?

Hmmm back to the bench...

OK, enlightenment!

Tried the standalone thin version of 1.6. Actually managed to get it to work nicely!
Seems the JAVA-Fat install calls on javaw.exe
If this is rerouted to java.exe with the same parameters it starts working. Only nag is there pops up a Cmdprompt-window which can't be closed as it holds the main process.

Other than that it works as a charm.

afisk look at this:

Orig. shortcut for 1.6:
Target C:\WINNT\system32\javaw.exe -cp . RunLime
Start in E:\Win2k\Program\Limewire
(Where \Limewire contains 1.6 install)

Does not connect to anything.

My modified as per Runlime.BAT-file in standalone:
C:\WINNT\system32\java.exe -cp . RunLime
E:\Win2k\Program\Limewire\test
(where \test is the standalone DL files)

This works as a workaround but saving settings and such seems somewhat erratic. Also it would be nice to lose the DOSwindow (Though it can be autominimized..hehe)

It would be interesting to see a comment on these findings, as I don't know JAVA.

Ahh,

wonderful to hear this. Being Old School I've always been negative towards being forced to install stuff without any control.

Interesting about javaw, i looked around for some info but soon drowned in the wealth of tech-info SUN had. I'm planning to try running the 1.6 and 1.6b with Java.exe instead of javaw.exe but haven't had time yet.

Do you know if there is a cmdline switch for java.exe to allow running w/out a DOS-window? I read about an autoexecuting JAR that you could compile into your application...

Other than that my tweaked 1.6 Thin-install seems to be working very nice, faster and more efficient than 1.4.
...now if only I could save my settings...hmmm

*Already looking forward to 1.7*

Cheers,

Paul

router.limewire.com should be working better now. Connections and pong responses should be immediate. The quality of the pongs may be a little out of whack. But, you also get nicely advertised if you can handle incoming connections.
