Beta Windows Version 1.6c - Please Try

http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/download_beta

We currently have only created a windows installer for version 1.6c. This installer tests:
+ downloading a Java VM only when required,
+ creating a generic shortcut to LimeWire and
+ it takes out the NewDotNet warning.

It would be helpful if users on Wi***/98/ME with the NewDotNet.dll software installed could try this and report any problems. (See http://new.net for this browser extension software.)

We also want to hear how the Java download and install works where required and not required.

I don't think there are any new features other than some sharing directory bug fixes.

Let us know here about any problems!

Thanks

Need more information

Snipes:

I just looked through your older posts. What OS are you running? When exactly do you get this error?

LameWire 1.6c

The version 1.6c is unable to connect anywhere, just like 1.6b.
Any attempt to connect to the network results in a "Failed to connect" message.

I have Wi*** and I'm behind a firewall.

The version 1.4b still works as usual.

What do you mean "won't connect to the network"? Are you referring to downloads or messaging connections (as listed on the "Connections" tab).

Re: Need more information

"Will not connect to the network" means that it cannot make any of the connections that are supposed to show up on the "Connections" tab. It will pretend it is trying to connect for a while, and then show the "Failed to connect" message at the bottom. That is the behavior I get when I use the "Communities" tab to connect. The other "Connect" button that's at the bottom doesn't seem to have any effect at all. All options/settings are unchanged at their defaults.

It would be really cool if you included a warning message when you detect bearshare style spyware installed on the computer and offer to un-install it. Thanks.

I am also getting the iKernal.exe error on install. Happens right after the file extractions.

Says "The InstallShield engine (iKernal.exe) could not be launched

Quits on startup

Using the LimeWire Shortcut on the desktop, I get a setup wizard, after it's done the splash screen shows for a few seconds and the program disappears and leaves a java error file somewhere.

(i have the java sdk installed; can this conflict? has anyone used it with jdk installed?):o    :D

I have the JDK. I couldn't get the windows installer to run-I ran into the iKernel.exe problem so many are having. I also had the Linux version(straight cross-platform java), so I installed it instead. Wrote a .bat to replace the .sh, and it works beautifully, though I did have to create my own icon. None of the install problems are addressed on the official LimeWire FAQ, alas, so I'm sure a lot of people are just giving up. They really need to improve the troubleshooting info!

iKernel error is baffling

We haven't been able to reproduce the iKernel error here. We'll try to talk with InstallShield about this, but I don't know of any immediate fixes.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!
