I have downloaded a large zipped file. On unzipping it, there were a number of zipped files inside. These all had the extension .z (rather than .zip); otherwise, the icon was that of WinZip. Yet my WinZip program would not recognise them. Please, can you help ?

I thought the simple answer would be to manually add the zip at the end of it & try to unzip them. Make a backup 1st if uncertain.

I don't know what application they belong to but ... it's got me. Are you sure it's not a unix based app.?

Traditionally, .z is used for files compressed with a Unix utility. I read this before, but I found it here also:

pack is the name of a program/command commonly found on Unix systems. I thought WinZip handled all common compression schemes, but maybe not this one. In the past I was able to find all kinds of freeware for Windows that would decompress anything. Just look for something that handles packed files.
