newbie question

When i open a file it go to windows media player and all i get is encountered an unknow error what im i doing worng the file is there but ican not open it.

Have you downloaded the correct codecs for WMP to be able to play the file you wish to view? Do you have the latest release of FFDSHOW installed on your computer?

Im new to this what ffdshow do i need and where do i find codec at ive look on the but there alot out there
