I can''t play avi files

I am using windiws player 7.1 and I have downloaded and installed the divx codec thing...
I still get the message that the file format is not found ...
After waiting for hours to download rush hour 2 I can't see it..
Any advice would be greatly appreciated..

Which version of DivX did you install? You need version 3.11 for most movies.
