invisible, nonexistent firewall I just experienced this problem as of today. I used to get fast downloads... (for me at least) at arround 100 kb a second. I also was sick of Microsoft's lousy firewall and service pack so I went to their sight and got the instructions on how to remove all that. It all worked well. So up to now I have installed NO firewall on my computer yet. Also the dowload bar for Limewire always shows turbo download speed. Now, all of a sudden, I closed down the comp today to simply reboot and when I start Limewire that was working great 5 min before it now indicates that my download speed is at connection speed and Limewire indicates it is working behind a firewall... my downloads are now 1 kb a second:mad: What in the world went wrong??!! Could someone please help me soon, it would really help, thank you. |
What do you mean it shows at connection speed do you mean the bars are green. You ay want to delete your preference folder follow the instructions in the thread below for that. Do you use a router. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36420 |
Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire Post back if it makes no difference. For such a quick change it tends to be the prefs. But it could also be your isp or connection device playing up. uh Grandpa beat me to the answer! lol :D Very good timing! lol  |
Now that was good timing lord |
:D Both thumbs up, and thank you first of all for a simple and explicit help. I am tired of forums that expect three words to answer a question... Now for the sad part:( I have Jre, (the latest version) so that is not an issue. I followed what you said but I was so frustrated I deleted all of limewire and reinstalled it entirely... it still does not work... actually it is working less and less. Yes I am on a router... DSL Cable and Wireless 3000 series. Sometimes limewire shows a firewall and an hour later it shows no firewall. I listen to winamp radio and there is no problem with a fast conection, I have tried doing and internet speed check and it sais I have a very good connection speed. So anymore help would be a great help, thank you |
You might need to to port forward your router the link below should help you with that. http://portforward.com/ |
Well, Thank you for the sight but I have been to it before. I did find out a few things though about if a router is not set up correctly it can establish itself as a firewall. I found that info at this sight for anyone interested. http://wiki.shareaza.com/static/FAQ.FirewallsRouters My problem is still not solved though and I am working on it, so anymore suggestions will help. thank you |
I noticed above you said you deleted all of limewire. One question and don't take offense it just isn't in your post. Did you follow the instructions in the link about deleting your preference folder or did you just delete LimeWire. The reason I ask this is because if you didn't follow the instructions on deleting the preference folder all of your settings will remain the same. Thus you are just reinstalling exactly the same as before. When you uninstall LimeWire your preference folder remains so that when you reinstall it you do not have to configure it again. |
No offence taken, thank you for your patience with me. I knew how limewire doesn't do an entire delete, so I manually deleted everything. Finally, I thought of going back to a restore point before I even had limewire and... here I am again. All I can think of doing is mentioning a few things I have seen and maybe it will let you know better what is going on. My DSL connection is supposed to be 1.25 Mbs. This is also what the service people told me. I tried using Bittornado, it showed I had a fluctuating speed of about 175 kbps (bytes, not bits) and yet it has taken over 6 hours of it it to donload 300 Mb file. (By the way, I know all these files take up banwith so I tried running them seperately) I tried getflash, and that seems to be running fine although for no reason is seemed to slow way down. I thought maybe it had to do with the router so I unplugged the other comp attatched to the router just in case there was an IP conflict. That did not change anything either.:( I am at a total loss. I have spent almost all my available time for the past three days trying to solve this problem. Got anymore ideas? Thanks again |
|
My download speed is 117 kbps Upload speed is 161 kbps Now here is where I get confused further. I just ran the same test again, without changing anything and here are the results. download speed- 167 kbps upload speed - 163 My speed tests are always indicating a constantly fluctuating speed. By the way- at the same time as the tests I have limewire running and it says I am still behind a firewall:confused: ... it says I am unconnected, and is downloading at 2 kbps. Thank you, I will keep my eyes open for more ideas. (oh, I used the websight you mentioned) |
It sounds like you know what you are doing do you know if LimeWire and you router are both set on port 6346. The only reason I ask this is because 1 time I was having the firewall issue and I had set my router but it still was showing the firewall icon. I pulled my hair out for about 4 hrs and I finally looked at limewire settings and it was set to listen to port 6349.I do not know how it got set to 6349 the default is 6346 and I did not change it. |
So you did port forwarding? If yes did you set LW for manual port forwarding? Within LW: Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that. Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image Is the result True/False? What brand & model of Modem/Router do you have? If it's an old one it may suffer packet loss/problems with handling hi-speed downlds consistently. |
Thank you all for keeping with me:) Here are a few added things I notice that might help and some details. 1. A line travels from my wall to a router and out of that router are three cables. One goes to a wireless router for an office computer, another goes to someone elses compture in the house. (They have zone alarm on their comp) the third cable goes to my computer. The reason for saying this is that I read somewhere that when several connections share a common router, the router itself can establish itself as a firewall. I don't know what to do about that. 2. I have tried running other p2p programs and they won't work... they state that they cannot open the neccesary ports. (I may have already said this but I have no firewall on my comp, and I personally deleted the windows firewall, its annoying) 3. I have a Netopia router 3364, I am based in the cayman Islands. (I state that not as personal info but needed, on the net I sometimes notice the Cayman router is specifically stated as such) 4. I checked on that line in the bug area of limewire and it states false (indicacting I have my invisible firewall) That is all I can think of for now, I will listen for more, thanks again |
NETOPIA P2P CONNECTION PROBLEMS Hello all, I am back and I don't intend the txt. above as yelling but I spelled it like that for a specific reason and will explain, hope you don't mind. It's because Netopia doesn't put this in their trouble shooting and someone that types it in at google or whatever search engine can come to this forum. As anyone can see from the forum thread above, I have gotten alot of help from limewire... thank you. It wasn't their fault it didn't work, but for all of you overseas this might apply to more than just Netopia users. If this is nothing new to you, sorry for wasting your time. (I am temporarily in the Cayman Islands) I state that because Grand Cayman seems to have it's own special set of problems) I was not able to make my port forwarding work (if you use netopia you have to go to a section called PINHOLES to access the port forwarding feature) Anyway, instead of using up lots of space just click on this link for instructions on netopia port forwarding. http://www.netopia.com/support/resou...wr_option.html Then just follow the screens... choose your model number, (it uses pictures for word challenged people like me:) ) Choose your model number again on the following page, then on the third page look down the list for "pinholes (portforwarding) It has a very good visual step by step walkthrough. Now!! for what they don't tell you. In some cases you will run into a problem called "dynamic IP" in basic, this means that your DSL company has thrown you for a loop. They have created something to help you out with security... the result is, 1. the company automatically changes your IP address every few hours. Not bad enough to stop your surfing and basic downloading, but enough to cause major havoc with p2p programs. 2. This also can cause an "invisible" firewall effect, causing limwire to slow down horably. In other words, you can deleate all of your firewalls, and limewire may act as though it is working from behind one.:( Translation, (if you tend to be as slow as me at times) Your DSL company is acting as a firewall. Here are your options. 1. The company may offer (as it does in the Cayman Islands) a buisness DSL upgrade that will provide you with a STATIC (unchanging) I.P. address. Unfortunately, you will have to pay extra. 2. ...be content with slower downloads and kiss the rest of your p2p programs goodby, unless you can tell us how to tweak things arround the system. Last of all, compliments and thanks to those that helped me with this 4 day research ordeal. And complements to L.W. for having a program that still will set itself up to work as well as possible arround all sorts of "invisible" firewalls, etc. Again, if anyone can beat the system please tell us. P.S. If you call netopia company for help it will cost you a minimun of $29 for help... and they couldn't solve my problem, they had no idea about "dynamic I.P. address. But he he, I talked them out of charging me, so if your good at "speech craft" for all you morrowind players... technical help might come free. :D Oh, I might add, to get a correct connection speed test for your comp. it is best to find a test that resides in your country. For Cayman Islands the link below will take you to a speed test place. http://speed.cwinternet.ky/internet/speed/test.php Thanks again :) |
So did you find a solution for yourself? I was curious whether a proxy might do the job. (I don't know if it's a viable possibility in your situation.) That would also mean going to LW's Tools>Options>Advanced>Proxy & making appropriate settings. More on Proxies here: A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 & 2 which has a link to alternative instructions. Another Insight proxy solution |
Oh well, I thought I had found an answer to my problem also... but now, without changing anything, L.W. now runs at turbo speed (it says the downloads are coming in at 100kb a sec. I don't know what happened. Other p2p programs still will not work though so I am at a temporary loss as to how to proceed. I will look at the info you gave me and learn about proxies though, I hope that helps. I don't know if its the router or my internet service provider. There are so many possibilities I don't know what to think, ahhh but I am left with the systematic approach. That may solve the problems... in a day, a week, a month... :( Oh well, back to the drawing board.:D |
Well, Perhaps I shouldn't respond to my own posts so much so hope no one minds. I think I am up a creek without a paddle. I just found out today that what has most likely happened is that the demand for DSL has skyrocketed our here... and instead of dealing much with the extra traffic, they simply overload their lines. The result is that even though I am supposed to receive 1.24 Mb a sec. I am fortunate to get 102kb a sec. A man at IBM support said they go through the same problem here and he thinks our internet provider is doing their best to cover up their faux pas by professing ignorance to the problem, or else they want to sell high price business and not deliver. I did notice outside my house yesterday they upgraded our connection cable and presto! it is rare to ever see LW's firewall indication appear:confused: That is really puzzling. So here is a new question... do you know of a program I can download that will allow me to open up more banwith to my computer, or basically hog more of the banwith from other users?:D Ok, maybe that isn't a nice question or perhaps that is alot to expect of a program, but hey, if I don't ask I will never know:) Thanks |
