Default Can't access Windows Shared folder

Hi all,

I know that this doesn't have anything to do with Limewire but I thought I'd ask as everyone here seems really knowledgable.

Whenever I go to 'My Computer' --> 'Shared Documents' and then try to open up a folder I created ages ago called 'New Stuff', I'm told that the folder is not accessible and that I don't have permission to open it. I'm the only account holder on the machine and I desperately need to get to some of my work stuff. I have tried opening the folder at the DOS prompt but still have had no luck.

The only thing I can think of that might have caused this problem is that other people were able to drop documents into the folder. Could someone have messed up the permissions?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks heaps,
Stu :-)

I'm not a windows knowledge but there is a chance that your permissions have become corrupt for some reason. You can go to Control panel > Admin Tools > Comp Management to set up permissions to particular folders. I can't remember the specifics.

In the meantime I'd suggest you do a Safe boot & try it then. Move the folder elsewhere. Also give your computer & good run over with file & disk utilities & AV program, etc. just to be on the safe side.

LATE EDIT: What I meant before was: start your pc in safe mode (press F8 during loading) & not a safe boot as I refered to it as (getting confused with mac terms! lol ) In safe mode it should help enable you to access the folder in question.

Hey Lord of the Rings,

Thanks for your reply, it seems as though you're always coming to my rescue (hee, hee). I'm actually normally not a Windows user either - I'm a proud Mac user. I actually bought this notebook to experiment with Mandrake Linux but as yet haven't had the time so it became my 'work' computer.

I have tried the Management tool and couldn't make sense of it. I have also run the virus checker and disk utilities over it with no problems reported. I'll just take it to a computer shop soon and get them to sort it out (hopefully).

Thanks again,
Sphynx

Thanks for your reply. You will have to excuse me as I'm not the best with Windows XP. Could you please be a little more specific?

I'm running Windows XP Home if that helps.

Thanks.
Sphynx :-)

I am not really sure what you want me to be clearer on but I will try. Click on start then click on control panel Then click on Local security settings. Usually shared document folders are set up for networks and is a place to share and store documents with other computers If someone else had access to this folder and you did not have it protected and they had administrative rights the could have lock the folder in question if this is the case it will take someone with more knowledge than I have to open it.

Also if you are running in in category view you will get there by clicking start then clicking performance and maintenance then clicking administrative tools then local security policy.

Hope this helps
