uninstall is flying high
Default I want to uninstall and delete LM but it isn't working

Hi, I've spent over an hour looking through posts and couldn't find exactly what I wanted so that's why I am posting.

I've had problems with LM since DL a few days ago (runs incredibly slowly, makes computer run slowly, get vast numbers of people 'loading' but none converted to uploads) and don't have the patience, time (or knowledge) to go through all the suggested fixes. Therefore, I want to COMPLETELY uninstall it and delete EVERYTHING to do with it.

I have gone to START>Programs>Limewire>uninstall and this produces a result saying it cannot find the shortcut. Then it searches and finds it but I can't use it through this method.
I have gone into Add/Remove programs (which would be my preferred method) and Limewire does not appear listed (it also does not appear listed on my program list in ZoneAlarm basic).

So, please can you tell me how to uninstall it and also, will this uninstall all the Java stuff that came along with it too or do I need to do that separately AND how will the Java stuff be written in the Add/Remove programs list because I am curious to see if that is currently listed.

Many thanks

Craig

uninstall

No wonder you have problems, you are trying to run a windows application in only 64MB of ram, I seriously doubt that you can get anything to run properly in less than 128MB nowadays.

I would normally suggest some sort of "delete" utility but honestly you haven't got the RAM to make anything work. So forget any automatic facility, practice a little patience and do it manually.

PS. Just a thought, reinstall LW then use Add/Remove to get rid of it, the new installation should update everything and make it visible in Control Panel then the Add/Remove facility should get rid of all of it.

Haha I was expecting that comment. I do have a lot of stuff on my computer and a lot of programs running. However, my computer runs pretty much fine most of the time. You get the odd freezes and errors but you will always get these.

It might be a problem with 64mb but by the sounds of it, many people are having problems with machines many times more powerful than mine.

What do you mean by a delete utility? I have no trouble running things.

If I re-install will this add additonal LM stuff to my computer or just go over what is already there?

The problem I have running it may be to do with the ram size but it should of DL and installed correctly, it hasn't.

Thanks for replying.

You went about uninstalling it the correct way. Not since about LW 4.3 could you use the Add/Remove control panel to uninstall LW. If the shortcut is the only error you received that it was unable to uninstall, then search desktop folders (& start) on your comp & manually delete it. Another method would be reinstalling as that uninstalls any previous LW at the beginning of the installation process. Then try uninstalling again using your original method. Make sure you're logged in with admin permissions. (I wonder if you couldn't uninstall the start menu shortcut because it was in use )

LW will only uninstall what it installed. It will not remove the preferences, downld folder (called Shared by default) or incomplete folder. These by default are found here C:\Documents and Settings\"your account name"\Shared or incomplete for NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP & preferences here: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire
Win 98 / ME: Your .limewire folder is in "C:\My Documents"

Java is normally uninstalled via the add/remove control panel. Not sure you'd want to uninstall Java though. Make sure you have at least version 3 for your browsers.

Hi, thanks for replying. I will give all that a go, well probably re-installing first and then uninstalling. I'm just worried if I go for re-installing it may cause more problems.
I didn't have LM running when I tried to uninstall.

What did you mean by make sure you are logged in with admin permissions?

By Java I just meant I want to uninstall whatever additional stuff was needed for LM (I think it is the Java stuff right? haha).

If I just delete it manually how can I be sure to get everything? What should I search for, I've seen on some posts on the net long file names e.g.

Go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run. If you find the value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr entversion\run\limeshop, delete it and reboot the machine immediately.

Remove these registry items (if present) with RegEdit:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\internet explorer\menuext\limeshop preferences
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\curre ntversion\explorer\menuorder\start menu\programs\limewire
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr entversion\installer\userdata\s-1-5-18\components\9e11dbbf317d89b4f92af7d63ab22d26

Aside from this can you recommend a free anti-spy program because I am using BT Yahoo Anti-spy but I feel it is missing stuff because when I have my browser open, sometimes the icons on the toolbar sorta flash or refresh (hard to explain) as if something is being activated maybe from typing?

Thanks

I'd have thought the uninstaller would remove the registry items. I thought that was the idea of using the uninstaller. Otherwise you could just remove the program manually by sending it to the trash.

As for spyware programs you need to be very careful of your choice when using p2p programs. Far too many of them out there on the market don't work well with p2p programs & think they are spywares. They fail to recognise that things like the magnets & http help links are a part of the program & not spywares. So in fact, your spyware utility might have done LW damage.

What's normally recommended is: 1. Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE), & you could also add 2. ad-ware (FREE) as they do slightly different jobs. More are http://www.norbiesworld.co.uk/Downloads/c=2.html but I'm not sure how p2p friendly all of those are. BTW Spybot got the thumbs up from a spyware forum as being one of the very best ones out there. (And apparently some spyware killers have spyware themselves. lol And there's also some scam spyware utilities on the market also! )

As for registry items, I'm not the one to ask. But as I said above, I was under the impression the uninstaller would remove them.

Thanks for all your help so far.

OK, so I have DL the offline installer again. I disconnected from the net and shut down virtually all my programs (left explorer running). Now LM IS appearing in Add/Remove programs. So, can I go ahead and uninstall it this way? You have said that I can't uninstall it this way? Yet it is there and when I highlight it, the add/remove button is activated.

Once I have uninstalled it how can I go about deleting it all. Do I just have to use search files/folders for "Limewire"? I just want to make sure I get it all and also, don't delete something I shouldn't.

On a completely different subject. The last few days when I have been using eBay it gets slow very quickly, after I have done a few searches and looked at a few auctions. I don't know what could be causing this, could it be ZoneAlarm or my measly 64mb ram (but I am having no other problems surfing the net or using programs)??

Many thanks
