Barbusa is flying high
Exclamation Beware of the 'skunk.exe'!

A pal has just alerted me to a really nasty little creature which first appeared just before Christmas and, as yet, there is no known cure, other than to reformat the affected hard disk partition.

It is able to fasten itself to email attachments sent from an infected machine so be very careful.

Info taken from - www.sophos.com:-

W32/Sunk-A (aka skunk.exe)
Type Worm

Aliases Virus.Win32.VB.aa

W32/Sunk-A is a worm for the Windows platform.
The worm will display the following fake error message:
"An unexpected error has occurred on the execution of this file"
W32/Sunk-A will attempt to replace every file on the infected computer that has the extension EXE with a copy of itself. The worm will also copy itself to folders known to be used by popular Peer-To-Peer programs using various names.
W32/Sunk-A will send messages to AIM users with one of the following messages and a link to a url that contains an executable:

Unfortunately, from checking their websites, it would appear that AVG, Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky and F-Prot have not heard of it and, according to my pal, Sophus is only able to offer a ‘part cure’ and is dependent on how long the virus has had to penetrate the system!

So unless you've got Sophus installed and fully up to date the chances are that it will not be picked up by your software.

Microsoft are also unaware of this one at the moment!

Is anybody else aware of this one?

Thanks for the info.

By the way, anti-virus producers share info so, sooner or later, other anti-virus apps will be updated to take care of this nasty creature.
