fake files Hi I've noticed recently in Limewire, that whatever file I search for, results are returned, that turn out to be wither invalid jpgs, or more likely, some toolbar for internet explorer. I know that a P2P programme is only as good as the files that are shared on it, but I am curious as to where these files com efrom. Some programme is returning these results, that do not exist - for example I can run a search for something that i KNOW should not return results (e.g. a random phrase), and always the same file list is returned. Where do these files come from? Does Limewire make files up so it can return more results? I cant believe this is true, so there must be an intermediate programme involved. Apologies for length, couldnt explain problem succinctly! |
Yes, there are many fake & infected files around these days. It's not LW doing it;) Many are spam, shared simply to sabotage p2p. Some contain more malicious malware & why these jerks spread virii around...good question. See here for virus probs on network: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=41432 See also: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...164#post104164 And: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=41870 All the more reason to be really careful with what you download & to learn how to recognise crap:D |
Thanks for the quick reply birdy. About the viruses and spam on P2P, I've noticed it, and that is certainly some of the stuff being returned. But I was just curious how, say if I do a search for my surname (which I know should return no results, as its pretty weird :) )LW still returns more than 10 results they must come from somewhere, and theres no way they are actual files, spam or otherwise J |
