I Can't Get Limewire 1.8 to run

When I open the program, the Limewire screen comes up and then immediately closes itself.

Unregistered November 14th, 2001 08:27 PM

Me too!! Anyone know why? I'm running win2k pro with ZOneAlarm installed. I have given full use permissions and it still opens and then immediatly closes

GregBildson November 15th, 2001 05:02 AM

Did you use a standard installer?

mdrouin001 November 15th, 2001 06:56 AM

it just won't work

I had 1.7 and upgraded to 1.8 and now my limewire will not even open. I double click on it and nothing happens. I have reinstalled it several times as well.

HELP!

Unregistered November 15th, 2001 05:46 PM

The traget on my 1.8 shortcut is set for "My Computer."
Anyone know how to fix it?

Unregistered November 18th, 2001 02:50 PM

Same here, it starts up and I get the screen and then it just shuts down right after it looks like it's ready to run. I'm also runing win 2k.

godsinger November 18th, 2001 05:06 PM

1.8 on Win2000 w/firewall

I can't get mine to work either. Same thing, the splash screen shows then goes to the program window, which immediately closes. It won't let me click on anything. I am using BlackIce, which I have set to Low, but it still doesn't work.

Unregistered November 19th, 2001 05:04 AM

I had exactly the same problem. Now I tried reinstalling LimeWire WITH the spyware **** (Gator etc.) and now it runs pretty well.

You know that Gator is the worst spyware that exists?

Drop LW in your trashcan...

Windows 2000 and 1.8c

This is apparantly happening on a LOT of Win2k machines...

Add four more to the mix.

tiascott November 24th, 2001 06:57 PM

Is Java available on your machine?

Unregistered November 25th, 2001 09:35 AM

I think that if we didn't have Java, it wouldn't show up at all. But if you have it, mostly it just shows up, you click on it, it shuts down. Bugger spyware! Bugger all!

Unregistered November 25th, 2001 07:33 PM

Ours, too!

Opens, then closes. I'll try 1.7.

Win2K running Sygate PFS firewall

afisk November 26th, 2001 08:07 AM

This problem should be fixed in LimeWire 1.8c, available at www.limewire.com.

Unregistered November 26th, 2001 08:27 AM

1.8c and Win2K

Still no good. 1.8c does the same thing. I just downloaded it on a clean-wipe machine, brand new install. Splash page comes up, program window comes up, 2 seconds, the whole thing shuts off.

Unregistered November 26th, 2001 04:28 PM

yeah 1.8c on win2k no other web aps not even a firewall are installed - screen appears then poof limewire does a quick exit....
what gives?

afisk November 27th, 2001 07:51 AM

The Cydoor ad engine is not getting installed properly. I will look into this further and try to fix the problem.

Thanks.

Unregistered November 28th, 2001 03:01 PM

Got a better idea....

remove the Cydoor Ad generator its a *feature* that i'm sure many of us would be happy to do without

afisk November 28th, 2001 03:58 PM

You can feel free to use the code from the open source project or download the zip installer.

Unregistered November 28th, 2001 04:15 PM

I have the same problem, All the windows updates are up to date, Java installed, running Windows 2K Pro. Behind a router and as soon as the GUI shows up it crashes.....I doubt the router has to do anything with it.

afisk November 28th, 2001 04:26 PM

Try downloading and running this file:

http://www9.limewire.com/developer/cydoor.exe

This will install the cydoor ad engine on your machine (it won't collect any information about you or anything like that -- all it does is display ads in LimeWire).

Once you have installed this, does LimeWire work the next time you try to run it?

Thanks.

Unregistered November 29th, 2001 04:46 PM

I tried following the link you posted and downloading cydoor, but I still can't run Limewire 1.8c. By the way, unlike many others that have posted on this issue, I'm not running Win2k but Win98SE. I had Limewire 1.7c running fine until about a week or 2 ago when it just stopped running when I clicked on the shortcut. Today I decided to uninstall it and install 1.8c and I'm wondering if this is all because you're basically forcing us to install other software (including spyware) that some of us definitely don't want.

Unregistered November 29th, 2001 05:12 PM

As a follow up to my previous post just above this one, I've decided Limewire isn't worth it and have uninstalled it along with all the spyware and other crap that comes with it. If you *******s want to sneak spyware in with your program, I'll use a different Gnutella client.

Unregistered November 30th, 2001 01:30 AM

Another "Me-too" post...

I have several computers, 2 Win2k Pro, 1 Win2k Svr, 3 NT4 Wrk, 1 NT4 Svr, and 2 Win98SE.

Tested newest version of Limewire 1.8c on all systems, and it craps out on all of them except the windows 98 boxes.

I'm NOT going to install the spyware just to get this stupid program to work. I'd rather support a program that doesn't shove adware down my throat.

afisk November 30th, 2001 12:11 PM

Just to clarify, LimeWire gives you the option not to install Gator and TopText during the installation process. Also, if you have any other suggestions for how to continue supporting software development, we're all ears! We will also likely have a paid version without ads/add-on software in the future.

Thanks.

afisk November 30th, 2001 12:11 PM

For the user having problems with the installer on all windows systems, are you getting errors during the installation process, or is LimeWire simply disappearing after starting for a second?

Thanks.

afisk November 30th, 2001 01:08 PM

By the way, have any of you run ad-aware? I know that users have had problems with it removing Cydoor, which will cause these types of crashes.

Thanks again.

Unregistered November 30th, 2001 07:06 PM

The program installs correctly. It just automatically shuts down as soon as the GUI is fully displayed.

Also let it be noted that this problem only occurs on my systems if you choose NOT to install the extra adware/spyware programs included. Just not worth it.

Unregistered December 1st, 2001 03:23 AM

Provide instructions for removing 'spyware'

Dear Mr. 'afisk' (or other "LimeWire" developers)

I checked "www.gator.com" and their software supposedly comes with a de-installer, but "LimeWire" didn't provide it.

So, please, tell me, even after I de-install "LimeWire", how to de-install these unwanted add-ons, companions and spy-ware.

You could at least provide instructions!

Unregistered December 1st, 2001 07:44 AM

Mine will run (1.8c) but only until i make one download, then it crashes. The ad window is visible but everything else turns gray.

I run a WinME box.

Unregistered December 2nd, 2001 03:48 AM

LimeWire 1.8c

Ditto with Windows NT SP6

program closes like everyone else when Gator and Text thing not installed with LimeWire.

Works OK when Gator and other junkware installed.

Poor Form!

Unregistered December 2nd, 2001 04:22 AM

Windows NT

LimeWare minus Gator & Top Text on install
==> LimeWire crashes as described in many posts

LimeWire plus Gator & Top Text
==> LimeWire works but have spyware loaded
LimeWire still works after unintalling Gator & Top Text but
OfferCompanion (a la Gator) is installed on reboot. LimeWire
continues to work after OfferCompanion is removed.

Attn afisk!

You hinted at the possiblity of a paid version of limewire, let me give you a few tips.....

Most people IMHO would be prepared to pay a small membership fee for the privilage of getting limewire without spy/adware.

As an added incentive members would be able to list there various interests, thereby getting access to the community tab in the program (which at the moment doesn't seem to have any use) making it easier for them to reach other users who might have the type of files they would be interested in.

IMHO the benefits would encourage most people to hand over a couple of dollars but then we get to my second point - DOLLARS!

This may surprise many American's but the whole world does not use dollars and more importantly the whole would does not have easy access to either a VISA or AMERICAN EXPRESS card.

Several times I have downloaded a program, used it, liked it, attempted to either purchase it or register it - only to be asked for one of the two above cards. For me this would require either changing bank so that I can get a VISA debit card on my current account OR attempting to blag my self a CREDIT CARD despite having a very poor credit rating. So my second tip is to strike a deal with an international websales company (Amazon springs to mind) for resales since these have different versions of there site in different countries. As an example I can use my SWITCH card with Amazon, by kid brother (he's only 15) can use his ELECTRON card, neither of these cards are normally recognised by American based sites. IF WE CANT BUY IT USING THE PAYMENT METHODS WE HAVE AVAILABLE TO US - WE WILL SIMPLY PIRATE IT

So in short make it cheap, make it easy for us to pay AND WE WILL PAY FOR IT

Make it expensive and difficult to obtain outside of the U.S. and watch us PIRATE IT

If the installer gives a user the option to not to install Gator and TopText then Limeware should not crash when a user installs this configuration. From a business perspective, if spy-ware is required to support your development model, then don't give people the option not to install it. You just succeed in frustrating everyone who innocently chooses that option. And judging from the posts - there is no hotter issue for you to resolve. I recommend that you put a link on your homepage to a page that explains these limitations immediately.

afisk December 5th, 2001 08:42 AM

Any installer crashes in any situation are definitely not our intention. We all seriously have to chill out on the conspiracy theories here.

There is likely something wrong with the installer here, as we know the Windows installer has some issues (most of which have to do with the extremely buggy latest version of InstallShield). I will look into this particular problem and try to come up with a solution.

For those who got this problem, you were definitely using the 1.8c installer?

As far as the international payment idea goes, that is definitely a good idea. Americans frequently forget that the rest of the world exists, admittedly. The issue will be more a matter of having the human resources to set it up, so you may have to resort to the "piracy" route for now. We really don't care so much about this (remember that with a little technical knowledge it's simple to get any version of LimeWire you want -- we're open source!!).

Vonotar, any interest in doing a translation of LimeWire? It's just a matter of translating a text file, so you don't need to know any programming.

Unregistered December 6th, 2001 04:22 PM

So far my experience with Limewire 1.8c on Y2K have been rather disappointing. Actually, disappointing is too high of a grade.

I also saw that afixk was looking for suggestions on development. Developer to developer, why don't you try testing your work before you post it on web for distribution.

same problem - new error message

afisk,

when lw1.8c crashes on my w2k, I get an error message in the lw dir reading something like:

An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM. Unexpected Signal : EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION occurred at PC=0x0
Function name=(N/A)
Library=(N/A)

suppose that won't help

best regards

Me too

Mine crashes on startup, too. I had 1.7d installed (and working fine), then installed 1.8c and it goes down as soon as it comes up. I am running Win2K and ZoneAlarm. I declined all spyware apps during installation. I had run Ad-Aware after my previous install of 1.7d, so it may have deleted that (whatever it was spyware program). In frustration, I installed BearShare, but I don't like the interface. I would much rather go back to LimeWire (though it would be nice if LimeWire would automatically re-issue searches and resume broken downloads -- does 1.8 have these features?)

Anyway, FYI -- here are some error logs I found in the LimeWire/1.8c directory, in case they help w/ debugging:

An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.
Unexpected Signal : EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION occurred at PC=0x0
Function name=(N/A)

Thanks for all of the error logs. The 1.9 beta, while it won't necessarily fix this problem, will not crash in these cases. You can download it from:

http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/download_beta

Thanks.

im running win98 and i had 1.7c but that did the same thing Flash Limewire thing and then close but then i downloaded 1.8c and it still does it with that.

afisk December 11th, 2001 12:39 PM

Try the beta at:

http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/download_beta

Unregistered December 11th, 2001 04:11 PM

Open and Close

I installed Cydoor and it fixed the open and close problem.

Thanks

Every time I click on my LimeWire link, My Computer shows up instead of LimeWire. Anyone know how I can actually get LimeWire to show up and work???

afisk December 12th, 2001 02:45 PM

That is very strange, although we have actually heard of people having that problem before. Try downloading and installing java separately from:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/download-windows.html

and then running LimeWire again. You could also try different shortcuts (Programs Menu, Desktop, LimeWire install directory).

i have windows 98 and i downloaded eveything above and it still does not work. Where can i get my old version? you think this stuff would be tested first

Unregistered December 16th, 2001 08:50 AM

Installing Cydoor fixed the problem here. Thanks.,

Don't you love how people get on you about a free program? Jeez. Get over it people! The fact that somebody would claim to be a developer and then be rude to other developers about a free program which is obviously of high quality, ****es me off...

As anyone who has actually developed windows programs knows, it is nearly impossible to test all of the combinations. Which is why you have a forum. The fact that they are reading and supporting the forum is amazing and should be congratulated -- bitching to them is rude, stupid and obnoxious.

I have the same problem but i know why. Limewire automatically closes after it starts up because Limewire uses the spyware called "CyDoor" which serves the ads in Limewire. If you remove Cydoors spyware using Adaware or some other prpgram, Limewire can not find the Cydoors spyware dlls so Limewire automatically closes. By the way, cydoors dlls are cd_clint.dll and cd_htm.dll which are placed in the C:\windows\system32
directory.
