Installation Error 1628
 

When trying to install V1.8, I get the following error:

1628: Failed to complete installation.

Win 2000 Pro / 384MB Ram / AMD Athlon 800Mhz

I suspect something in the Registry is corrupted as it will not uninstall or complete installation.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

How do you correct the 1628 error problem???

I wish I knew....I can't even uninstall it. The V1.8 shows in the Add/Remove programs but does nothing...can't install, can't remove thus I believe it has contaminated the registry.

HEY...MODERATOR....how about telling me where in the registry I can remove the pointers to Limewire????? I no longer have Limewire in my computer and will NOT recommend use of the program because of the contamination to the registry.

Limewire 1.8 was perfectly running on my cpu with win2000 but then i had the same problem (err1628) after som changes with the JavaRE.
However i found a possible solution.
I don't know if it's the best way, but it's quite effective.

At first i deleted all limewire-programfiles and the entries in the Start-Programs.
Then i opened the regedit (start-run (?,german: ausführen)).
There i used the search-tool with "limewire" and deleted all results. (there are quite a lot)

Finally i installed limewire again, and now it performes like before the JRE-troubles.

I hope it also works out with your systems!

I have had the same error but unlike others I'm using
windows Me. I also get a message before getting the 1628
one, that says -858993460: internal error in windows Installer.
I have also installed Bear Share before.

is there a way to repair this?

I would strongly recommend giving the newest version a try. It is in beta right now, but we've been testing this beta for several weeks with different versions, as it's probably the most significant LimeWire release to date. It should also be the official release very soon.

There have been some installer changes, so hopefully it will work for you. It's available at:

I don't know if the latest "trick" works but If it doesn't try this one: I just installed the new update of netscape, and specified the installation with java. It takes up more HD space but after having installed it I was able to install limewire, I hope this will help you, all of you who had this problem!

Are you still getting this error with the LimeWire 2.0 installer?

First, make sure that all previous versions of LimeWire are uninstalled in the Settings>>Control Panel>>Add/Remove Programs window.

Once you have done this, try restarting and then running the LimeWire installer again.

I'm going on vacation, so I won't be able to help you until the middle of January, but the above is the best I can recommend.

I received this 1628 error when I installed Limewire Basic Windows XP (English Only).

At the download site try installing the "(International)" version. This one worked for me. Hope it helps!

mayherstupidmouth: There is a chance you received this error b/c your installshield engines need updating (for the english installer.) I put a sticky at the top of the installation>windows section to explain about this & where to go to update your install engines. At present the international version uses Java 1.3 & forces it to use 1.3 to cope with international characters. But, a later version of Java is generally prefered so the english installer is generally the prefered option so it can use later versions of Java.
