Lord of the Rings has a distinguished reputation

Your problem is most likely CODECs so what we normally recommend is a reliable player with in-built codecs called VLC - (click on link) _ (choose nearest mirror site)

Otherwise see CODECs list and alternate players for Movies

It's one of the Stickies at the top of the sections of the forums.
