What i did.... hi i have had a similar problem recently symptoms: limewire pops up repeatedly, ctr-alt-del doesn't work, regedit.exe wouldn't start from run prompt in start menu. here's what i found: I found this line "C:\Program Files\outlook\outlook.exe" in my hi-jack this log. It looks ok at first, but what this means is that you have outlook (i.e. your e-mail program) running. This would normally be fine BUT I DIDN'T HAVE OUTLOOK RUNNING!! I spent hours looking at this but all i really took in the end was 1) Make sure you are not running the real version of Outlook (to avoid confusion later) 2) Open windows task manager by opening it in C:\windows\system32\taskmgr.exe (the one with the nice icon!) It has to be done like this as ctr-alt-del doesn't work. 3) once it has opened click processes, click on outlook.exe, then click end-process 4) Now program is not running you can look at "C:\Program Files\outlook\outlook.exe" and simply rename it to something like "outlook.ex" (which is not possible while it was running) note: i also had some other programs running at around the same time of the problem. One called setup.exe (i altered registry to stop that loading at startup) and updater.exe which kept loading itself (again i changed registry to stop that) but my point is i don't think they were related to the limewire popup problem because the limewire problem kept happening right up until i followed the steps above. I hope this helps and saves you time, Mark (the_wanderer) Keywords: LimeWire, Limewire, limewire, popup, pop-up, reload, re-load, virus, viruses, re-open, re-opens |

I'm not so sure that will solve most people's problems though .. if they have a virus then they need to eradicate it & then repair the damage. Norbie will show how to do that. He "is" an expert in this area. |

use System Restore for Limewire virus setup.exe I recently came upon this virus on a second computer. The first one was over a year ago. The information in the previous posts is good, but for those who need a simple appraoch that should work as well I recommend XP's "System Restore" built in to the operating system. It was not previously mentioned as an option, and it works in this case. This is for the downloaded from Limewire "setup.exe" file which is then run and which then disables the command prompt (cmd.exe) and ctrl-alt-delete (Task Manager) and regedit and keeps starting LImewire automatically. System Restore will reverse all these symptoms. And you won't have to know the names of any files (which may vary from machine to machine, anyway) You must have a restore point from before you first ran the setup.exe. You must know approximately when you first ran setup.exe so you can choose a good restore point. You must have had system restore running (it usually is.) If those things are true. you can get rid of the virus with System Restore. On the start menu go to programs, then, accessories, then system tools, then system restore. Follow the directions to restore your computer to an earlier time. Two sidenotes never mentioned in this thread or the other articles I read about this virus. Not only does it keep starting Limewire, but it changes a key setting in Limewire. It makes all of your "Documents and Settings" folder and sub folders shared, so any Limewire user can see and download all files in these folders. Also, when this setup.exe is run, it causes the cursor to change to an hourglass, momentarily, and then ... nothing. No setup, no error messages. This should be a tip-off that you may have executed a virus. |
