Thumbs down LimeWire 8.0 broke McAfee VirusScan!

After installing LimeWire 8.0, which itself did not work on my Windows 2000 PC, my McAfee VirusScan no longer worked! I uninstalled LimeWire from the Control Panel and reinstalled McAfee. My McAfee still does not work! It worked fine before. Here is the message I see in the Event Viewer:

"The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( AVSynMgr ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: AVSynMgr error: 126, VirusScan has been stopped due to a missing or outdated Avsynch.dll library. Please reinstall the product.."

As I said before, I did as the message suggested and reinstalled VirusScan, but still get the same error message. Apparently LimeWire 8.0 did something to my system which the uninstall did not clean up. How do I completely remove/undo all the changes LimeWire 8.0 made to my system? As you know, Virus protection is extremely important these days, so I would appreciate a quick and thorough response.

Aaron Sentell

Info about VirusScan:
VirusScan Build 5.12
Avsynch.dll is version 4.5.499
Avsynch.dll Build Date is 3/29/2000

Default Oops! I meant Limewire 1.8

In my first message, I said Limewire 8.0. I meant Limewire 1.8.

Please help!

McAfee support will not help me until I am sure Limewire is COMPLETELY off my system.

Hmm,

Adam yes Limewire donīt change something in the registry but the ads do...

@ unregistered

Did you install Gator and eZula?

If so deinstall Limewire... d/l ad-aware clean your harddisk... than reinstall Limewire without Gator and eZula...

http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0...0-7302674.html

works it now?

You must keep the cydoors because lw donīt work without them...

The best to avoid the ads is to purchase the PRO version!

Default Been there, done that

Adam,

Thanks for your response. I have already twice done as you suggested, but the problem is still there. I see no reason to believe that doing it again will provide different results.

All I know is my McAfee VirusScan was working before I installed Limewire 1.8, and now it doesn't work even after uninstalling Limewire 1.8. Is there ANYTHING that the uninstall might have left behind that I can manually take care of? What I find strange is that the avsynch.dll is installed as part of VirusScan under the VirusScan folder. What has LimeWire done to affect this? This library file is only located in that one folder.

Thanks,
Aaron

Post Please respond

I would very much like to get VirusScan, which I purchased and which was broken by Limewire 1.8, back up and running on my PC. I've tried Adam's recommendation multiple times but to no avail. Can someone please help me?

Thanks,
Aaron

I would strongly recommend doing exactly what it says. You may have already done this, but I would try the following:

1) Close all programs
2) Uninstall McAffee from the Add/Remove Programs window if it appears there
3) Restart your computer
4) Reinstall McAffee
5) Maybe another restart just for good measure.
6) See if it works.

Good luck!
Doesn't modify the registry?? I would have to call bullsh!t on that one.

If your virus scanner doesn't happen to catch Limewire trying to install the Trojan you will probably end up with more entries for a Bargain Buddy program - which I have never seen before. I am already imaging all of the wonderful ways it will improve my life, though. All in all it's alot of registry entries, for a program that doesn't modify the registry.

Angry Still not working

OK, I've been extremely patient here, but I'm beginning to get a little frustrated. I downloaded LimeWire 1.8, and now my McAfee VirusScan will not load. I've completely uninstalled and re-installed it. I've gone into the registry and onto my hard drive and removed all occurrences I could find of McAfee and the "problem" dll. Still, when I re-install VirusScan from scratch, I get the exact same error.

My VirusScan broke immediately upon my installing LimeWire 1.8, so there is no other explanation for what is causing this problems on my system. I spent hard-earned money on McAfee VirusScan, and it is a critical part of my system protection strategy.

Your product broke my PC, so I feel it's at least partly your responsibility to help me resolve it.

Thank you,
Aaron

Default Good Grief

You'd think that if v1.8 really broke McAfee, there'd be a lot more folks screaming about it!
