Default One more try

One would think so, I agree. But I have proof that it did on my PC. There is no other explanation. Perhaps others didn't have the same configuration I do.

I'm going to remove all files and registry entries on my PC for McAfee and Limewire and attempt to re-install McAfee VirusScan one final time. If that doesn't work, I'm going to bite the bullet and buy Norton's Virus protection software and send LameWire...I mean LimeWire...a bill for it! And I will definitely never download any of LimeWire's applications again without letting other people find all the problems first.

Good luck to everybody else out there! You'll need it!

Default Accuracy

What is accurate, however, is that LimeWire makes available on the net software that is not well-tested and capable of causing pain-in-the-neck problems on the unfortunate downloader's PC.

Default Calming down

Adam,

Thank you for your patience with my problem. I have calmed down somewhat because things have worked out pretty well for me financially in replacing McAfee with Norton AntiVirus -- it's basically free after a Turbo Tax rebate and competitive upgrade.

I am still quite disappointed in the Limewire *and* McAfee products (their support is the pits!), and I will think long and hard before ever installing software developed by either company in the future. This whole experience has been a royal pain in the !@#, but it's not directed at you personally.

Thanks again,
Aaron

Lightbulb fixing VirusScan

I had the same experience where VirusScan broke _immediately_ after installing the latest LimeWire.

After trying everything, I found this site

http://www.bugtoaster.com/dw15/Repor...sp?DefectID=77

which suggests executing Avsynmgr.exe from the Run section of the registry instead of the RunServices section.

move the McAfeeVirusScanService key from

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices]

to

[...\Run]

Default Mcafee

While i'm no programmer , and I won't say Limewire is perfect . Mcafee reinstalls are notoriously a pain in the A** .Support is now a farce what with their "subscription" services taking center stage. It is imperative that you dump your temp dir. as the instalshield will keep calling up the same old files from temp, if you root around temp you'll notice that you could do a reinstall from there without the need for the CD.Clean the registry, then clean it again. The later versions of Mcafee which now use Windows Installer seem to work somewhat better , but still no paradise, it's a tough call , mcafee with the myriad pains or Norton with their notorious ability for resource suction on 9x platforms. yours truly DD

Default Same Problem

I have had the same problem on two of my computers running Win 2000. When I loaded Limewire, McAfee stopped working. Similarly the scheduled tasks icon no longer loads on start up. While I can get McAfee to work by opening the program and starting the virus scan, the scan no longer works in the background.
When I start McAffe, I get a warning message noting that "Vshield is not loaded, would you like to start it now" but it does not start when I click yes.
Sadly, uninstalling Limewire and McAfee and then reinstalling McAfee has not solved the problem.

Does anyone know of a fix? I am not a programmer, but would like to get my computer back to its previous state.

OK, to make it short: Adaware will remove the problem with McAfee. The same problem frequently appears in other forums for Imesh and Grokster. BTW. If a broken virusscanner is the only problem Cydoor caused for you, you´ve been lucky. I´ve experienced much worse things myself.
Run Adaware, let it delete everything that is Cydoor related, then uninstall and reinstall the scanner and go and look for LimeWire 1.7 (the one without cydoor)

Default McAffee and Adaware

Thanks Steve,
I tried Adaware, removed all the Cydoor references and uninstalled and reinstalled. Still had the problem. So I did a manual uninstall of McAfee and then a reinstall. Still have the problem.

I also note that I no longer get the Scheduled Tasks icon in my system tray. Could these problems be related since the VirusScan when working would also load in the system tray and scan in the background?
