Unhappy Hello to all + Browse Host question

First off...Hi everyone including the moderators. My first time on here, I just registered so I am a bit confused.

Question! How can I block myself from being browed? I am using Windows XP, on DSL and Limewire version 4.10.5 Pro. I have looked all thru the tools - Options menu repeatedly and cannot find a switch to permit or deny being browsed by others.

Thanks for your help.

Welcome

The browse host function works erratically, although supposedly it works better if you have chat enabled, so disable chat to try to keep others from browsing you.

If you don't want to share your files, go to tools...options...sharing and remove all folders from the top window. Also, untick 'share finished downloads'. You can also go to tools...options...uploads and reduce upload bandwidth to 0% and upload slots to 0.

Hope this helps

Dano

Wink Browse Host Question

Hi Dano!
Thx for the info. I am sharing quite a few files currently and occasionally click on the "Monitor" tab where I see a comment "File Not Found". Some files I have removed from the shared folder and those titles are where I find the comment. I supposed that was rresult of being browsed.

I certainly want to continue sharing with others. Thx for the tips on disabling chat and the upload bandwidth.

There's a world of difference between allowing people to find your files while running a search, and allowing them to just open up your directories and take what the want. I want to turn off the latter option, and I think there should be a way to do it.

People can't just 'take whatever they want'...the only files that they will see in their search results and have access to are the files in the folders that you choose to share.

You should definitely be careful what folders you share, so people don't have access to private information.

Hope this helps

If someone searches for "abc.mp3", and I have it, that's all I want them to see. I don't want them to be able to "Browse Host" to see what else I might have. I have a web site for that purpose.

Vigilante

There are two things to do that will stop most people from browsing you while still allowing you to share your files:

a) Disable Chat - For some reason, with Chat enabled people can browse your shared directory/folder a lot easier, without it users find it difficult to browse.

b) Use a firewall, like Zone Alarm, Norton PF, etc. A properly configured firewall will/can prevent browsing but will allow in P2P users searching for individual files.

So with both facilities working you stand a 90 - 100% of getting what you want.

I, myself, have disabled chat, use Norton Personal Firewall 2005, PeerGuardian and have a NAT firewall in my modem/router and I can still share my files and, I believe, without being browsed.

I'll admit...there have been times when I get annoyed and can tell someone was browsing me. I'll see their IP address over and over as they try to download many of my files. I do have chat enabled, as this doesn't happen too often! To each their own.

Cheers

Dan
