Try this ...
5. Right-clicking the Limewire icon and going to properties and change compatability setting to Windows 2000. (but only if you're using Windows 2000 or later.) Somebody reported changing to Windows NT compatibility fixed their problem despite not using that operating system version.

6. Right-click on the Limewire icon on the desktop and click on Run as. Then it should come up showing the current user and then switch it over to Administrator. (but 'only' if you're the admin of your comp.!)

Okay, I have also been having this problem for over a month at least. Every time Limewire opens, it acts like it's going to work and then, without warning, it just shuts down. One thing I have noticed is that the LW window does not actually close until I either move my mouse, click, or try to type something. I can do any of these things while the program is "still loading" but once it seems to be loaded, doing anything at all closes the program. I have been using Limewire for over a year or more, on this same computer. The problem did not appear to beging from any system or configuration changes, it simply happened one day and has never worked since. Limewire has worked fine with all of the hardware and software currently loaded into the computer. I have also tried the suggestions posted here, including uninstalling and reinstalling both Java and Limewire, at least a couple of times for each. I have also tried uninstalling Limewire both ways, through the Add/Remove Programs section, and from the Limewire portion in the "Start Menu".

My system information as requested:

1. what OS version? (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista) Win XP Home SP2
2. What firewalls you have ? Only the Win XP firewall
3. How much ram ? 768 MB
4. Hard Disk space available ? 26 gb
5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ? DSL
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers ? Speedstream 5200
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.) ? [B****** (apt.)[/B]
8. What version,LimeWire & Java,Go to L/W's Help/About L/W, THIS show both LW & Java version.? LW-4.12.11 ... Java-1.6.0_01
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider) ? Alltel / Windstream
10. Do this test click here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ should say 'Your test worked!. What happens ? "Your test worked!"
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. None
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.? New problem with an experienced user
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface ? While loading in, the brick wall is there, once loaded, the wall disappears and the "mouseover" states that no firewall is detected.
14. Have you given full permisions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall ? Yes
15. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.? On

Just an added note, I did re-try using Limewire with the Firewall turned off .. and there was no difference.

Hey Everyone,

I have had the same problem with Limewire and for those who have Limewire Pro.... I have found a solution too all this stuff going on about Limewire Crashing... Well please do the following to fix this problem

DO NOT USE JAVA 6 UPDATE 1... This is the problem to it all i have spent a hole morning working out the problem and UNISTALL IT... Uninstall JAVA 6 UPDATE 1 Along with every other Jave you have...

Then download Java 5 Update 11 which is the most previous version of Java and there is no pboblems with it...

https://sdlc1a.sun.com/ECom/EComActi...40CCE7A9542EF5 Download Java 5 Update 11 Here, It doesn't matter if you get the offline 1 or the online 1. Sorry i dont know how to use code on this site but the above website is the Java website so all is safe.

After all this Defragment your computer just to tidy it up and all (This is optinal)
Then RESET your computer.. This should fix the problem it worked for me and i have told u everytihng i done... I hope this helps all you Limewire Fans. Ignore the Java program becuase it will tell you to update to version 6 dont do it i havn't tried it and i dont want to do this all over again so a summary over this...

Only Java you have is 5 Update 11
Reset Computer
All should be working

P.S. I create thisaccount just to tell you all this and post a reply telling me if this works.

Well, I don't know about anybody else, but the java 5 suggestion seems to have worked for me. At least the program doesn't die on me right away ... now I can see if I have the "need sources" issue people have talked about, but this is a start, at least!

Thanks for the suggestion!

My limewire has worked fine for several months. Now I have the problem of not being able to open it. It looks like it is starting and then shuts down. I went throught the recomended steps of removal /installation and it does the same thing. I had to stay connected to the internet to download java.
