Default Limewire launches wrong (or no) media player

My son's PC has windows has Windows XP home. He is using limewire pro 4.10. Limewire had been launching WMP (Windows Media Player) for mp3 files.

I changed the system default to VLC and now limewire launches nothing.

On my DELL laptop with XP Media Center Edition, BEFORE installing limewire PRO 4.10, I changed the default mp3 app from Winamp to VLC. Limewire somehow launhes Winamp.

I have had this same problem with many versions of limewire and windows. Changing the default player NEVER caused limewire to follow suit.

I would appreciate any help you can give me on this.

Hey Kenny, How are you setting the default player??
You can try this if it's different than what you have tried. Hope this works.

While in Limewire go to Library. Now click Explore, in lower left corner. This will take you to your saved/shared folder outside of Limewire. Now Right click any file. Highlight Open With. Now go to choose VLC and click Always use Program to open.... and click OK.

Some audio players have their own settings for being the default to open files. So check for this also. I can't remember if Winamp has this or not. But the story rings a bell. Also, for windows, when an audio player realises it is no longer the default, it will ask you if you wish it to be the default next time you open that program. Also, installing new versions of audio players can change default. Audio players in windows seem to have a mighty battle on between each other to become the default player. Also keep in mind there's different types of audio files. eg: mp3pro which also has the mp3 extension, & of course m4a, etc.

Changing the default player from limewire explore does not make a difference. I can change to WMP or Winamp and they will work.

VLC will not work. Somehow , it must be invoked differently than the others.

I used Remoc's suggestion and LW launched audio and video files in vlc on my machine(XP with LW 4.14.10). I tried it just to see, and it worked fine.
