Today more than 75% of the files I downloaded are like this.
I have reinstalled my audio drivers and codecs but to no avail. Is this just a coincidence that I'm trying to download files that are fakes/corrupt or is there something else that it could be?

Odd .. since iTunes has its limited in-built codecs. Check that the files themselves are valid audio files & not corrupt or virus spam. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/downlo...load-help.html

How large are the files? What are the file sizes of the files that will not play? Check http://www.gnutellaforums.com/downlo...note-them.html & see if the size is listed.

I was referring to music selections. 1/2 play, 1/2 won't. In this instance, size doesn't matter!

There's various types of spam, one are viruses posing as mp3's or wma's, and another are deliberately corrupt files. mp3 Bit-Rates Versus File Sizes. If you have a rough idea how large a music file should be according to its bitrate & you see a file with a size that does not match what would be expected for the bit rate, then chances are it's a deliberately corrupt file.

Other than that, LW's media player is not that good anyway & gets low cpu attention compared to LW's main functions of uploading & downloading, etc.

Default Limewire cannot play the file.... there is an unknown error with the audio file

I have been having problems lately with some mp3 downloads from Limewire which I haven't had in the past. I did have repair work done on my MacBook Pro laptop computer however, and the replacement system board may be preventing limewire to recognize mp3's for some reason. The message I get when I try to play some files with Limewire is the one I posted in the thread title. I have tried converting the files, and even playing them in other applications with similar difficulty. Sometimes all I get is a few seconds of hiss for a 5 MB file. Yet, other audio files will play

Any suggestions. I've searched the Gnutella forum and haven't found anything specific to this problem which indicates why some mp3 files will play and others won't. What could possibly be causing the unknown error, other than someone pranking gnutella with files which are incorrectly labeled with the .mp3 designation.

Thanks
singa2n

I'm not sure I understand the correlation between bitrate and filesize. What about if there is not a bit rate listed?
