We always recommend this player VLC - (click on link) _ (choose nearest mirror site) which is free. And then perhaps see Setting Default video app

As for codecs, see CODECs list and alternate players for Movies. The conversions of file formats is generally discussed in the Tips & Tricks section of the forums, since it applies to all gnutella users. (Oh & I guess you can always look at the "Similar Threads" window at bottom of page.)
