Previewing files

Please help,
I'm downloading avi files and when I go to preview the file it says that windows media player has encounter and error and will not play the file. Is there something wrong with the files or the wmp program?? I have tried downloading other avi files only to run into the same problem, anyone please help me.. what can I do??
