Default How do I disable Limewire pop-up ads?

I downloaded Limewire from the official site and now I have pop-ups. I have a pop-up blocker and haven't had any pop-ups for years. But the second I download Limewire, I am suddenly buried in pop-ups.

I put my blocker to high and it has reduced the amount, but they are still getting through. Just now I have already had 5-6 ads pop-up.

They are coming from Limewire, or are directly associated with Limewire. I was downloading the Limewire accelerator and on one of the pages it refers to using CiD as one of the options. CiD are the letters on the top left corner of every pop-up ad.

I removed Limewire from my computer and downloaded spybot and then cleaned my computer and re-downloaded Limewire. I still have those pop-ups. They obviously got past my blocker by piggy-backing on Limewire.

I see on Limewire's main page "NO ADWARE"! As this is getting into my computer through Limewire I was wanting to know how I can disable this function. I have an antivirus and firewall in place and my pop-up blocker has been blocking everything for years while set on medium. So the only way this could have gotten in is with Limewire.

I contacted Limewire through general comments as I can't find a tech support link. My spybot found CiD:IEpops in my computer and removed it. Also Zedo, which is part of CiD and removed that. But they are still getting through.

Is my only option to remove Limewire from my computer? Or is there a specific file in Limewire I can delete? This question is directed at Limewire, can the moderator direct me to someone that can answer this question please?

If you downloaded LW from Lime Wire » Download LimeWire then it's free of malware. The popups are more likely associated with the so-called 'accelerator' that you downloaded There's no link to any accelerator on the official LW site. There's more info about these dodgy things below.

No more internet (not just LimeWire) thanks to Accelerator

LimeWire Accelerator Patch?

If it was me, I'd remove the thing & scan for spyware & adware again. Also run an AV scan just in case. If you don't already have it, Ad-Aware is a good, free tool for finding adware.

Default Thank You Birdy!

I really appreciate all the info. I will definitely use the links you have provided. I'll remove the download of Limewire I have completely from my system. Then use the software you have suggested and download Limewire from the link you have provided.

The pop-ups were there from the moment I downloaded Limewire, it wasn't until later that I tried using the accelerator. This is the site I downloaded from:

Lime Wire » Official Website & Free Download, BitTorrent «

I guess it's not the official site even though it says it is.

Hi DB1,

That link is to the official site (we usually query the download site just because there are so many LW scams). I've just been to the site thru your link, downloaded the latest basic installer, scanned it with AVG Antispyware & Avira Antivir (came up clean on both), installed it & no popups. I've run Spybot & nothing was found.

Were you linked to that site for download, from another site?? Uninstall the LW that you have (start > all programs > Limewire > use the uninstall option). Scan your computer with Spybot & Ad-Aware. Then use my link to download LW & use the offline installer. When you've clicked to download & the box pops up, cancel it...now you'll see the option to use the offline installer.

Install LW & see what happens. I've been using LW for years & never had any malware associated with the installer. Not being a smartass, but are you sure that the popups started as soon as you installed LW? You didn't download any files before you noticed the popups? There are that many infected files on the network, maybe you downloaded a dirty file straight after installation??

Default Thank again

Thanks Birdy for going to all that trouble. I wasn't linked to Limewire from another site. I accessed the site and then clicked on the links that took me to the page to download.

By other files do you mean, did I download a song, and then the ads started popping up?

The ads appeared to start popping up "very shortly" after I downloaded Limewire. At this point I can't recall if I had downloaded a song immediately or not. I don't think so, because I had never used it before and I didn't have a clue what to do until I had a chance to study the pages on the site. The ads started appearing almost immediately.

I have just removed Limewire from my computer using add/remove but I also went through and removed the file in Programs, and from my task bar, and from my start up list. A friend suggested that I google a CiD and Zedo tool kit to remove them from my system, as he said they can imbed themselves deep into my computer.

I will install the adware you suggested and the removal kits and clean my computer again, and then download from the link you provided. That is odd that I managed to find an accelerator if I was using the official site.

Thanks so much for all the effort you have gone to on my behalf, it is much appreciated.
