Default Limewire shutting itself down on start-up

I have loaded Limewire 4.16.6

My machine is running: Windows XP Home Edition w/ SP2, 1GB RAM, 20GB of HD space free and a DSL connection. I run Norton 360 with firewall but have given Limewire an unlimited access to the internet.

The install went without incident. I execute the program and get the loading icon as it goes through its self diagnostic/loading process. The Limewire window opens up and the bar at the bottom continues to load. Suddenly the entire program will shut down. The limewire icon is down in my system tray but when i bring my mouse pointer over it, the icon dissappears!

I have tried to un-install then re-install the program. I have gone as far as going into my registry after an un-install in removing anything associated with Limewire, then re-installing. I have checked my Task Manager for running programs and checked EVERY SINGLE PROCESS (there were 39 Processes running), but none of them were associated with Limewire. I checked my startup sequence for Windows XP and nothing related to Limewire were being loaded.

I am beginning to get frusterated. Does anyone else have any advice on what could be causing the crash or if I am missing anything? Any help would be much appreciated!

Check these options: Fixes for Limewire (click on blue link)

Offline installations of both LW & Java are more reliable & safer than online installations. Also, sometimes one version of Java behaves better or worse on a particular person's system, so consider trying a different version of Java.

Over the past two weeks I have updated my Windows XP Home Edition SP2 to the latest version of Java via Sun Microsystem's website. I have tried to install LimeWire version 4.16.6 for Windows XP after fully uninstalling all previous versions and removing their profiles in Documents & Settings. I do a restart then attempt to install the lastest version of LimeWire. A quick message comes up saying that it is removing previous versions of LimeWire, then the program finishes its installation.

When I execute the LimeWire program, it goes through the initial setup where I must designate the folder to save downloads to, etc. Before I can even complete the next window (where I choose if I want LimeWire to execute on system startup, etc.), the program just shuts off! No system error messages or anything!

I have tried to Uninstall the entire program, boot to Windows Safe Mode for the installation, but cannot execute it bacause Safe Mode has no internet access. I am forced to restart to Windows into Normal Mode where i execute the program and it (again) shuts down before I can get through the configuration process.

I have tried to take out any and all unnecessary programs an my windows startup via the msconfig utility, but it does not change my outcome.

I believe I have followed all the instructions from the LimeWire Fixes/Help page that was linked in the above response from Lord of the Rings.

I don't know what else I can do at this point? I just can't get LimeWire to work! Lol It's maddening! Is there anything else I can do?

Best advice is to remove all your Java versions. Then go to Start menu -> Programs -> LW -> Uninstall.

2. Delete your LW preferences folder as described in link in post #2 above point 3 in that link page.

3. Run this utility: Crap Cleaner

4. Download and install the "OFFLINE" Java version

5. Download and install the "OFFLINE" LW version (the non-preferred option).

My guess is one of the Java versions is not working properly for you. Question is which one. Try Java 1.6 first. If not work correctly, then remove it, and download and install java 1.5 instead.
