For Windows 7, you must set Java to Run as Administrator ! Otherwise it will have difficulties such as connection problems. I also incurred the same problem at one time.

Since LPE seems not to run with the newest Java 1.7 which I suspect is really a beta, it will probably be easiest for you to reinstall Java 1.6.

Right-click the Java 1.6 installer & choose 'Run as Administrator'. You may need to reboot after installing I'm not sure. Download the safer 'Offline' Java Installer For Windows: Java Downloads for All Operating Systems.

It would also not hurt to do the same for LPE, right-click the short-cut on desktop for LPE & choose Run as Admin. when you get to that point.

Thanks Lord of the Rings. I can now connect and am happily downloading successfully where possible. I ignore the license pop-up and it seems to go ok. However I have downloaded some items which have informed me in an American accent that 'this is an illegal download' and directing me to a website where I can download for free legally. I think it is the newer stuff that it complains about: ie James Taylor ok - Rumer - not ok.

What is your experience or take on this?

You will find quite a high percentage of spam files that are put up by the record companies as spoilers. There are also a significant number of malware files designed to infect your machine. You need to build up experience to find the "real" files and filter out the rest.

Thanks for the warning - I have downloaded 4 files and scanned them with AVG and they are all clean but I will stay alert.

For previewing of video files, I recommend VLC. If VLC cannot play any video or audio file then the file is probably fake. VLC will not allow any file to send you to a website. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

In Limewire Pirate Edition under Advanced Tools I see peers can no longer be promoted to ultrapeers as of this morning. What is going on?

I keep getting promoted either directly after starting up or an hour or so later. I guess it was just one of those times you were not promoted for some odd reason. Perhaps lots of ultrapeers already in your region. I started up several times over past 24 hours, due to crashes lol. Stupid java memory keeps running out. (But all times started up as a UP over past 24 hrs at least.)

The longer you are connected, the better your chances of promotion to ultrapeer. After an hour or two, drop the longest connected one or two ultrapeers from your connection, this may be the catalyst for you becoming one yourself. Though often LW does it by itself (a little haphazardly on odd occasioins I notice.)

Just check to be sure in the advanced window it does not say you are firewalled. I find after a very long session or sometimes after starting up, it says I'm firewalled. I restart & all is fine. In some cases, I suspect this is a java overload of communications that disrupts the communications with the router's UPnP. LW 5 has lots more behind the scene java talk happening than earlier versions of LW. I did mention that as an issue in a previous post of this thread that I updated a few times (post #174, p18.)

Oh maybe I misunderstood your meaning. If running as an ultrapeer, the Ultrapeers figure will be zero. All other ultrapeers you are connected with are represented as Peers (equals). The GiF image below shows me connecting, eventually with 33 Peers, though that usually stabilises down to 32 for me at least, on my bandwidth.

I also recently (5-6 days ago) had connection problems with LPE in different accounts on Mac OSX and Windows. LPE connects fine now after I replaced the connection file.
