Not any special helpful news. At least in my testing on Ubuntu LW refuses to run with Java 7 alone. Nor did it seem to work with the open java 6. On linux you can have a few versions of java installed and simply make java 6 the default (and I think link particular purposes to particular versions.) I don't know how others got LW to work on their Linuxes. But I had to install the Sun (Oracle) Java 1.6 and set it as default to get LW 5 to work. For my ubuntu I needed the jre-6u43-linux-x64.bin file, found here (along with others), without the need to register, give name, address, phone, company, purpose, name of the neighbor's cat. For anybody else who cannot rely on the open JDK version. As the bash script suggests, sh.

OK silly me, LPE has no problems on Linux running under Oracle's Java 7 (64-bit). No signs of buggy-ness either. LW does not like the open source java jdk 6 or 7 on my ubuntu.

Just discovered an answer to a problem I've had for a few months now. 'Unable to scan for viruses' after finishing downloading a file. This issue also seemed to affect transferring music files to iTunes.

I will re-upload the LPE & LW5.5 installers to include this instruction in the props file that's installed if you install the security packages. I did not suffer this issue on Windows 8 (but since discovered the AVG bundle is not supported on Win 8 anyway), but is intended as an extra precautionary step against the possibility of this issue occurring to anybody else. Edit: I only changed the File_Girl LPE props file so far because those using Metapirate's LPE may wish to keep the AV active. But as far as we know, it is no longer possible to download the avg virus definitions (since about Jan/Feb 2011.)

LW 5.3.6 should be able to connect without issue. Only issue might be if it had an old connection file. All LW 5 versions suffer same issue that if the connection file is 30 or more days old then LW will delete the file as it opens and then unable to connect.

Get a fresh connection installer for LW from here. If you do not use LW 5.3 very often then perhaps install LimeStart also.

One good thing about LW 5.3.6 is it was a little lighter than the later versions. ie: not quite as over-bloated in size. There were also a couple other good things about 5.3 that were removed in later versions. One of these removals was due to pressure the company was under from their early legal negotiations.

Birdy and I always believed LW 5 should never have been released publicly until at least 5.2. Instead the company used their general LW user community as beta testers for a program that simply was not up to scratch. But even 5.2 was somewhat buggy.
