Yes I am. I've just been into Control Panel/User Accounts and Family Safety/ Add/Remove User Accounts and it shows me as Administrator. If I click Change that gives me the option to change it to a Standard user. Fairly definitive I think. However I have downloaded Java again (for the 5th Time) dragged it onto the desktop and right clicked the icon - no 'Run as Administrator' option.

Very frustrated.

I don't understand what's happening there. But there's two techniques as I described on a previous post. One is to get Properties -> Compatibility tab & check Run as Admin. You can either do that with the java.exe file already installed or with the installer.

After that, use the connection fix installer to make sure you have a good connection file.

Also, I presume you are only using Windows Firewall & LW is an exception in it?

I'm afraid I'm 1 step forward 2 back. I re-installed Java 6 got a successful install message and then when I ran the confirm step it couldn't find it. I have now installed Java 7, confirmed it, found it in programs, right clicked on it and 'run as administrator'. So far hunky dory.

I now start LimeWire and it tells me I need to install Java! It gives me the link to go around the block again, I think people could spend their whole lives going around in circles with this one!

I have now uninstalled LimeWire as I couldn't start it because of this Java problem, and want to re-install it, but can't find a suitable link that doesn't involve installing all sorts of other crap. Can you supply a link please?

Are there any issues running with Java 7? It says 'java 1.6 and above' in the LimeWire requirements page, so presumably it should be ok.

I don't trust the Java website's check Java is installed properly, I've also had same message it couldn't find it but LW worked fine. I'm guessing that check is not set up for Java 6.

As for using Java 7, you will need to use LimeStart in order to use LW with Java 7. That's a workaround for LW having problems opening directly with Java 7. LimeStart for Windows via MediaFire. ie: use LimeStart for opening LW instead of opening LW directly. The LimeStart installer will replace the shortcuts with same LW name but link to the LimeStart program instead.

And finally, LPE Connection Fix installer, also via MediaFire.


The crap you refer to packaged with the LW installers included LimeStart, connection file, optional settings for safe use & an optional blocklist. Perhaps if you had installed that crap in the first place you wouldn't have had all the problems you are having. lol

It seems everyone who downloads LPE or a version of LW 5 from other sources & is using Java 7 ends up coming here & finding links to the LimeStart-Java fix installer (about 60-70 downloads/week, though was over 100/w mid last year.)

Thanks for that - no the crap I'm talking about is all sorts of promotional garbage like download managers (Livid) and nasty stuff like FB Downloader that take over your home page. A lot of these 'invitations' to install have no 'decline' option an end up aborting the whole process.

Anyway, I'll give it one more go today and then I think I'll get on with the rest of my life! I appreciate all the help you've provided. I know you guys do it out of pride in the product (LimeWire) and a genuine urge to help poor saps like me, and it is much appreciated. All the best.

Just a thought - would it not be possible to package LimeWire Pirate edition as a self-contained, self-install, works-out-of-the-box, semi-automated process? I know it's not a commercial product and nobody makes any money but you fellas invest a lot of time and energy helping people get over the same old problems. Why not invest that time and energy in making the whole process more foolproof?

The LW installer is the one the LW devs made & uses its own installer software. I'm not sure what kind of changes are made to the system during the install process to do a self-contained installer; for example, registry changes. I believe File_Girl knows but she's rarely around.

Interesting point though, I could try working on one so it's an all in one installer simply with options during the install process. I suspect it sounds easier than it really is. I know it previously crossed my mind at some point.

As for the download sites' promotional downloads, try to ignore those. None of them are compulsory & you simply need to find the correct download button on the site's web page.

so this might not be the right place to put this, but has anyone recieved a court date for using illegal software which im assuming is limewire pirated edition. It was in my junk folder. Dunno weither to throw it out or not.

It would be news for me if LimeWire was illegal to use. The court action in the USA over LimeWire prevented the company distributing the software. But that is totally different to other persons using it for personal use.

The email sounds highly suspicious to me. I'd re-check what it says & who it claims to be from. I'd personally trace the source of their ip address.

Just to be on the safe side I moved the zip attachment to Linux before opening. There is an exe file inside. I suspect this is a dangerous file and not from any court persons. Firstly it seems strange you would be notified by email instead of via registered postal mail. Secondly, the document should be a readable file such as a PDF or text document. Instead the file is an exe which is no doubt a hoax and potentially very dangerous script file 'probably' used for identity theft or to steal banking details or in some other way take control of your computer.

At this point I have not researched the two senders (both with different non-related email addresses which do not appear to be from any court jurisdiction or legal group) but will do that later.

Also in replying to the 2nd email to you, it warned I was attempting to attach a file before sending. Dangerous emails it seems.

So in summary at this point in time, ignore those emails, evidence points to a hoax and was spam.
