What's worse than "freeloading"?

OK, so I'm brand new but I have a couple of observations. Only about one in twenty of my search hits actually yield a connection. That's even when I only try hits with Server "Available" and Web "On". But what's worse are the download speeds once I do get connected. Even limiting my search to ISDN or better I get estimated download times of 2400 hours, 3600 hours?!? Three to five months for a download? Incredible! I left the connections on for a couple of days to see if the speeds would change. Nope. They kept blazing along at a reliable 44 bps. It wasn't my bandwidth (DSL), computer, or client software; some files downloaded like gangbusters.
Now maybe Gnotella was never intended for movie-sized files, but there isn't anything that I can see that would prevent it from working, given the proper configuration. I mean does it make any sense to "share" a 700 MB file and then limit your upload speeds and/or allow so many simultaneous uploads that no one can actually download it? Do the people "sharing" these files really believe that they are performing a service for others? Or are they really machines supplied by the motion picture industry set up to clog the network with frustration?

That is a good question, unfortunatly one I can't answer, but, while on the subject... How often does that happen? How much traffic is really companies out to clog up or take down gnutella networks and what are the riaa and their lapdogs doing to slow us down? I know they've got to be trying something... I mean... the introduction of the mandragore virus... Yeah, I'm sure that was just an accidnet... right. Can anyone answer this?

i get a lot of unreliable downloads also and i am often wondering why all my uploads go with >100kbps while my downloads rarely come to that speed (had 1,5mbps once though). there are two things i think:

a) misconfiguration
the thing you mentioned: someone allows 10 downloads per connection and 20 connections at once. nothing you can do but hope to find a time there no one else is downloading.

b) general internet traffic
i often have slow connections stating an ETA of 30, 50 or even >100 hours. the next morning the files are completed. i guess this is just the problem with general internet traffic - on daytime all the businesses are online and especially usa<->europe connections are heavily loaded. on night-time then it gets better and the downloads speed up.

so try to figure out the good hosts. and don't rely on the speed the clients have provided - i had the 1,5 mbps download from a client with 24kb speed and let them run for a while even if it doesn't look so good. i have a large number of unsuccessful downloads (unfortunately), but there always comes the time there one succeeds ... also it often takes a loooong time before you are lucky enough to get a free slot on busy servers. but patience helps you on

I think this is the big one right here. BearShare allows way too many by default and users seldom know to correct this. The problem just gets worse when sharing large files. If you're sharing anything over a 10 meg you're better off to only allow one or two uploads at a time, but letting them have good bandwidth. Otherwise you'll get more starting, but they'll all be too slow to ever finish.

Yeah and, dammit, you people all need to share the files after you download them!!!!

I think in order to help improve the already congested network, try making a rule for yourself where for every file you download, you let at least 5 other people download it off you before you decide to move it off your completed folder. 5 is a good number to offset all the leecher bitches and the modem people who can't help it.

Just today I left gnutella on while I ran errands, and when I came back I felt really good about myself when I saw all the completed uploads YAY!!!!

Also about that misconfig - hey gnotella/lime/bear guys? Could you PLEASE start including lower upload max-user settings in your defaults. Sheeesh. We're all not sharing jpegs.

Boy am I glad I got brittney's exclusive unreleased playboy pic. I had no idea.
