suggestion for next release

The next version of Gnucleus should enable blocking of ranges of IP addresses in the Connect > Filter window of the prefrences.

i.e. currently, you can block "1.2.3.4", or "1.2.*.*" etc...
but filtering of ranges such as "1.2.3.0 - 1.2.50.255" would be great... kind of like what we already have in the Search > Block window, just add it to the Connect > Filter.

I feel there is more of a need for this feature now than there ever was, and welcome any comments.

Thanx for your time:)

Hi, Elusive......

I am curious, and I promise you I do not have any intention of starting anything heavy here, but WHAT are your reasons for wishing to block not only individual hosts, but further ranges of IPs ????

Hey ursula thanks for the question...

Basically I think it would be a good idea to use it to prevent connections to these bots that the big businesses are starting to use.
It's not that I condone piracy, just I fear kind of the same thing happening with gnutella that happened with Napster. Napster at one point got so bad that independant artists couldn't even host their works for download because the name for their group kind of "resembled" one of the bigger names in music.

For example: say I share a file named "The Hairy Potter.pdf." In reality, this is a story about a guy with a lot of hair that makes pottery, but one of these 'cyber cops' would instantly assume I was trying to pirate an ebook I didn't own or have permission to distribute. Typos and misspellings are common on file sharing networks anyway, and I highly doubt they take the time to download and verify that it is in fact, pirated material.

and don't ask me why I showed up as "Unregistered" in that last post, as I was logged in when I made the reply.
