i can't download almost anything i'm searching.

when trying to download, i always have the status message : "unable to connect".

I have the same problem using Gnucleus 1.4.5.0, but it only seems to happen when I try to download from BearShare clients. A "Connecting to Host" status appears for the download, followed about 10 seconds later by the "Unable to connect" message.

For all of the other clients, I am getting a "Waiting to retry" status when I can't connect. I just verified this using various downloads from 10 BearShare clients and 10 non-Bearshare clients. The non-Bearshare clients included LimeWire, Gnotella and "unknown." It doesn't seem to matter if the client is behind a firewall or not.

Has anybody else seen this particular behavior?

Did you happen to be behind a firewall? Or a NAT?
If so, check the failed connection ( right-click / Extended Info ). If it shows something like "Firewall, Stable" you have your answer. Gnucleus is unable to establish a connection if both ends are behind a firewall ( check the FAQ at the Gnucleus site )

I experienced the same.
besides that, it seems that the timeout setting that Gnucleus is using to determine if a client is available is way to short, besides that it's not configurable manualy.
This resides to me on file with 22 hosts all to be timed out. Basicly, this happened to all my test downloads. None came true and 98% of the hosts found where eighter timedout or remotely canceled.
This thing needs some tweaks.

Another thing that I'm missing is simply a preselect list for media types. I like the filter part though.

Another annoying thing: When is a file put in the failed state? If so, why isn't it automaticly researching and retrying. Now you've got to manualy activate it again. That's a pain.

router.limewire is gone, and newer clients are changing to the .6 connection spec so it is harder to find older clients to connect to. make sure bearshare's host cache is in your list, it still works good. .6 is suposto be compatable with older clients but I think bearshare and limewire decided it would be in their own best interest to cut us all off.

0.6 has been supported in gnucleus for a long time. Gnucleus also has a pretty sizable host cache and IRC fall back cache to make sure you get hosts. I'm investigating right now why some users have a harder time connecting to the network.

You can try upgrading to the newest version available at: gnucleus.uni.cc

It was updated today so the cache should be very functional.

If it still isn't connecting try adding some peers from one of these web caches:

Skulls! Multi-Network WebCache 0.2.8
Skulls! Multi-Network WebCache 0.2.8
GWebCacheII Data
Bazooka GWC (0.3.6 Beta)
Bazooka GWC (0.3.6 Beta)

Make sure to forward the port you got Gnucleus listening on if you are behind a router. It will work vastly better that way.
