Question Newbie needs help!

Hi, I'm wondering are Gnutella and qtella the same thing? Aside from that. . .I believe I have compiled the program qtella correctly but I'm not sure what command I use to start qtella? If it does start is there anything I need to do after?

Thanks!

Smile where to start make install command?

OK, I've downloaded a copy of gtk and untar'ed it. In the process it created a /usr directory and so I thought I could use ./configure while in that directory but no such luck. Can you tell me what directory I should be in to run the ./configure and "make install" commands? And what command should I use to start the program once I've installed it correctly?

thanks!!!

Oh, you seem to be new to linux
What you have downloaded looks like a binary tgz.
Well, could you tell me which linux distro you use? Maybe it could get easier for you...

The ./configure and make commands are normally executed in a directory with sources.. but you seem to have binaries..

OK.
As far as i know, Mandrake is a RPM based distribution, which means that you can use RPM packages to install programs.

So download the RPM and install it either with some mandrake specific tool or with:

$ rpm -Uhv gtk-gnutella-0.91.9-1.i386.rpm

That's it. Just type gtk-gnutella to launch it. You may want to switch to leaf mode.
Now go and read a linux book, tutorial, whatever on howto compile most of your software yourself

Talking where to start make install command?

I did and it worked! Thanks! Why couldn't I use the .tgz file? Why did I have to use the .rpm aren't both formats supported?

THANK-YOU

Well sure you could use the .tgz but if you use a binary tgz anyway, you better use a rpm because thats simpler to manage, update and uninstall.
As far as i know, you extract the binary tgz files by going to the / directory and doing (as root):

# tar xfvz /home/you/gtk-gnutella-whatever.tgz

That will put the files on your system.
But as i said, if you dont use sources anyway better pick the RPM if your system supports it.

And remember to keep track if new versions get released I have the feeling that in < 2 weeks we will have another new beta
