 wow. Not only you don't even bother using 0.96-1, you try to kid me with .deb? Hey big boy, I recommended 0.96 which is the right thing to do before bitching about outdated versions and I even ensured there were .deb pakages because I saw you were using Ubuntu. No wonder you can't get connected. As the thread you linked pointed, you can always try LW.
