Default Strange Search Results.....

Hi to all on the Gnutella forum..!!

I don't know if this is going to be a daft question, though when I search for a known MAC Program like for instance mtr 3, the search give me loads of mtr 3.exe files, mtr 3.wma, mtr 3.mov, which don't make any sense at all...

Also when I have downloaded an mtr 3.zip file for this particular program, it un-packs as a setup.exe WTF...!!

Can anyone give me any clues here, as I should be getting files with the extension .dmg, though nothing seams to appear!!

Am I missing something here...?

I am using Phex p2p, on an Intel Mac

Sounds obviously like spam to me. When searching you can filter out certain file extensions. To get a good idea of spam to be aware of & careful of, see Virus thread: Typical virus spam file sizes - Make a note of them (click on blue link to see). (Examples shown were whilst using LimeWire, but same principle applies.)

The gnutella network is not the best place to seek program files. But yes, dmg or zip files for mac.

Be afraid, be very afraid of software you get via p-p. Even when good people are trying to share good software, there is often a problem (bad installer, etc).

If you absolutely must get a program via p-p, you may want to look into torrents. Find sources that have received at least a few positive comments from others who claim to have downloaded the file(s). Even then, no guarantee of safety. Scan everything before you open it. Wear a wetsuit.

Be sure that you have a virus scanner and that it's sharp - this goes not only for programs, but also for any other kind of file.

Since you use a Mac, you're a bit safer than Windows users, but still better not get reckless. Scan every file you download and if you're in doubt, don't use it.

As a general tip: When you search, you cann append "dmg" to the search and then throw away everything which doesn't *end* with .dmg
That gets most of the spam.

Banning the spammers can also help a lot.

If nothing appears, you can try to search at some other time (maybe someone who has your program will be online then). If that also doesn't help, it's likely that noone out there shares your program.
