Instead of downloading the Generic_theme from the LimeWire site go into .limewire>theme. If there is a theme called other_theme then use that to create your skin with. I found that the skins I made were easily read by LimeWire when doing it this way.;) After you're done, just rename the other_theme into whatever you want.

A possible fix for problems with file extention changes.

I've finally found a way that works for me, and hasn't given me any problems or headaches with trying to change something to have the .lwtp file extention.... if you're still having problems after following CyberStalker's instructions, no matter what you do - as I was, I had actually completely given up on trying to create a theme for a while... then I got a thought (which is rare for me! lol) and tried something different... I went into the themes folder for limewire and copied one of the .lwtp files to where I had been working on my theme (-copied- NOT moved, incase anyone tries duplicating what I did), renamed it to have the same name as the theme I was working on (leaving the file extention as .lwtp) and then moved the renamed file and the folder for my theme to the limewire themes folder.... lo and behold, it worked!! And without the headache of extention-changes!!

Good luck to anyone working on making themes, and no matter how you do it I hope everything works out for you!!

CyberStalker February 3rd, 2006 12:45 PM

That's how I made some of my skins. I just made a copy of the .lwtp file and the folder containing the .gifs and renamed it. Then I made alterations on most of the .gif files and volia! I had my new skin!:)

This happens when you click on the Download to LimeWire link? It shouldn't. What should happen is LimeWire will open up and the download will begin.

CyberStalker April 21st, 2006 01:30 PM

What do you use, Windows or Mac? If you tell me which skin you want I'll download it and put it through either YouSendIt or Megaupload and I'll give you the link so you can download it.:) Let me know what you want to do.

thomasaii April 22nd, 2006 04:03 AM

i use windows

i use windows and thx id like the red theme

CyberStalker April 22nd, 2006 08:59 AM

Here it is.:)

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WGMKNCIJ

When you unzip it, cut and paste the red_theme folder(containing the .gifs and .txt file) in the themes folder. Then rename the other file red_theme.lwtp. All you have to do is add the .lwtp. After you do that, cut that file and paste it in the themes folder. When you go into LimeWire, go into View>Apply Skins>Refresh Skins then go back into that again and you will see your new skin in the list!:)

straight outta compton July 31st, 2006 04:21 PM

but there is no other file

Theblindswordsman October 21st, 2006 01:15 PM

Alright, help me out...
The directory "C://documents and settings/my username/limewire" doesn't exist.
The limewire directory, in program files, doesn't have a "themes" folder,
it has a .JAR file named "themes". I don't know where to put my skin files!!!!!
Help me out please!

garbagefan2 October 21st, 2006 04:22 PM

It changed. Mine is somewhere else. The location should be at c: documents and settings/your user name/application data/limewire/themes and that's where it is. But you need to be able to view hidden files and folders. To do this if you haven't already you need to open a folder and click tools. Then when it comes up click the view tab. Then scroll down to where it says hidden files and folders. When your there it says don't show hidden folders and files. Change that to view hidden files and folders. Then find the limewire folder where it is at above. I hope this helps.

Theblindswordsman October 22nd, 2006 03:33 AM

Correct!!!!!

It helped. That's exactly where the right folder was. Thanks.

Hi, If you are running Windows XP your skins need to go in the following folder:

C://Documents and Settings/Your Username/.limewire/themes/

You need to move the skins from your Shared Folder to the folder above.

I did as you mentioned above and when I tried to change to the new skin, LW didn't list it. Soooooooooo, I just extracted the files from the new skin into one of the other skin folders (zipped original files first of course) and then switch to that one. Not the easyest way of doing things, but it worked!

I'll tell you how to do it, step by step so you'll know for the next time you want to download another.

1. Once you have your .zipped skin, click on the Themes folder in the .limwire folder and create a new folder. If the skin you downloaded is called Christmas(this is just an example), then name the folder Christmas_theme.

2. Unzip the skin and make a copy of all of the .gifs, .txt, etc. and paste them in the Christmas_theme folder.

3. Click on the unzipped file and rename it Christmas_theme.lwtp.

4. Cut the Christmas_theme.lwtp file and paste it in the Themes folder.

Now when you go into LimeWire click on View>Apply Skins>Refresh Skins then go into apply skins again and you should see your new skin.

Let me know if you need anymore help.;)

I tried that, but when I finished doing all of that, I selected the skin I wanted in the Apply Skins part and it said that it doesn't exist or is invalid. I'm just about to give up here.

yeahitsme April 29th, 2008 03:49 PM

when i do this it says....the skin file you selected does not exist or is invalid....but it still shows up on the list????

cavalry57 May 12th, 2008 12:01 AM

Ok this site helped me so i will put the info back out there.
For those of you running vista, you need to click on start.
Now in the start search box, type folder options.
You will see it at the top of the list.
Click on it.
Now Click on the view tab.
One of the selections in this view will be HIDDEN FOLDERS.
Make sure that SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS is selected.
Right below that make sure HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES is unchecked.
Hit APPLY.

Now go to Start again. In the very top right hand corner of that window you will see a name of some sort. Probably your own. It's w/e you named your computer. Click on that.
Now you should see a sorta ghostly looking folder called AppData.
Click on that.
Click on Roaming
Click on Limewire
Click on Themes
Now this is the folder you will save your zipped themes.
From here you will right-click on any zipped folder that you save here and rename it. Literally right-click and scroll down that box until you highlight rename. A box will form around the current file name. Press the right arrow key. press backspace until you see .zip disappear. type .lwtp. Press enter.
Your new file should read whatever.ltwp.
It used to read whatever.zip
Now you can open limewire and go to view, and go to apply skins and then select w/e skin you want.

Still no Skins

I have done all of this stuff I have read on here, I'm so fed up with Vista I am ready to give this brand new laptop a good thrashing with a baseball bat. I finally got the themes in the right folders and finally got them to show up in my list in limewire but when I select one it says "this theme is out of date, please download the latest version" then redirects me back to that same page that I just downloaded it from. i also downloaded one through limewire and when it asked me if I wanted it to be my current theme I said yes and geuss what it said "this them is out of date, please download the latest version" then redirects me to the same **** page. Can someone please help me with this. How can these themes be out of date when it redirects me right back to the same page?

If you're using a LW 4 version, it's .lwtp. If you're using a LW 5 version then you can't change skins - skins support wasn't added to LW 5.

MidnyteBlu January 28th, 2011 12:21 AM

thank you Birdy

actually i wanted to know for sure so the i change the extension right for Frostwire fwtp i think

birdy January 28th, 2011 12:28 AM

For FW you would have to change the zip to .fwtp ;)

Check out these threads, or else have a search of the FW section for more info...
