Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Angry Limewire 2.5.5 Pro disappointing at best

I paid the $10 to get Limewire 2.5.5 Pro downloaded it and wished I hadn't. Everytime I open limewire it rehashes my main share folder which has over 600 files in it. This is slowing the app way down. Then I find that I can only share one folder. Either the default shared foler or my folder with all the files I have previously downloaded. Each time I go to options and add a folder the previous one diappears. I have tried setting up a new save folder and sharing that, same results one folder displays the other disappears.
I was much happier before I got 2.5.5 Pro
Any help on the subject would be great

You must have screwed up something, since it will write the hashes to a file called fileurns.cache and usually doesn't hash files twice.

You must have screwed up BIG TIME, to have that problem!

You can simply add folders to share in options.sharing.

I am a long time Limewire user (Windows 2000) and have not experienced your problem. I am flying blind here but you wouldn't be changing the "Saving" directory as opposed to the "Shared" Directories...? The only other thing that comes to mind is that Limewire does add any sub-directories that exist so... if you are trying to add a sub-directory when you already have the parent direcotry listed it would likely supplant the existing parent directory... thus the problem you appear to be having. That might also explain the re-hashing.

The problem was with the initial hashing of the folder with 600 files. Once it was completely finished all the folders showed up.

Thumbs down Limewire 2.5.5

I have been useing limewire since 1.8 days and I must say since then limewire has started to go downhill in terms of number of searches returned. I currently am using 2.5.5 and basically I have to let Limewire warm up for about 15 mins before I can get any searches out of limewire. I also have to keep deleting those morpheous clients out of the connections section or searching is even worse. I bought limewire and I like the interface and such. Other firends of mine that use limeware has also noted the lack files/searches. I really think the older versions of limeware are better. Also I don't think limeware can compare to WinMX. http://www.winmx.com and if you disagree with me and you havent tried winmx you should. Its free and contains no spyware vrap in it. Its way more advanced then limewire and returns thousands of searches to the few hunded I get with limewire. Instead of working on a skinning system for limewire which is currently in CVS I would work on getting better searches out of it.

While I am a fan of Limewire I must agree that the results are disappointing... I do believe Limewire is more stable that ever and I feel the search results issue overall is not a Limewire problem, rather a Gnutella problem... I have found Shareaza to be the best Gnutella client thus far as it is rich with features (such as ignoring Morpheus) and strikes me as the most versitile and robust client for Gnutella... I am installing WinMX as I type this and hope to run it through it's paces for the next few days.

Red face similiar problem

I am having a similiar problem with 2.5.5 pro where I cannot even add a directory that has mp3's in it already because I will browse to that particular directory and limewire shows it as being empty even though it is full of music. Also I have downloaded several mp3's and in my library tab all I show is the incomplete folder not the shared one. I must say I paid 10 bucks for the pro version but the free one did not have these problems. So now I have an add free sub par version. Any help of fixes on the way would be great. Thanks

Talking oops

My problem finding my files using the library seems to be more of a user error thing I figured out *blush* hehe. In windows XP there is a documents folder for each separate user and also a shared documents folder so I wasnt lookin in the right place /bonk self. It still was kind of confusing though that my files didnt show up when selecting which directories to share/save in and you have to select the actual folder itself instead of actually going inside the folder (which allows you to see its contents) which is kind of different then most programs. Anyway I did get it working to its all good. Thanks for the reply!

Just to let everyone know, we're working on a new searching architecture for all of Gnutella. It's called "GUESS," or the Gnutella UDP Extension for Scalable Searches. It will be several orders of magnitude more efficient. In particular, it will provide far better search results for rare files than the current system. It basically scraps the entire Gnutella search model in favor of searching UltraPeers one by one very quickly over UDP until you get enough results. You should see it coming out in beta for LimeWire 3.0 or so in the next several months.

I would agree that the decreased search results on the current network are not a result of changes in LimeWire. In particular, I would assert that using LW 1.8, or any older LimeWire, would experience similar poor results. The Gnutella network is extremely dynamic, with little changes having big effects. The most significant recent change was Morpheus completely switching its code base to yet another open source project. This means, among other things, that they no longer support UltraPeers. This means that now the majority of clients on Gnutella do not have UltraPeers, dramatically worsening the density of the network and, most likely, making search results significantly worse.

So, I'd just ask that everyone keep in mind the degree to which the network of today is significantly different from the network even two months ago (before the new Morpheus). The change to the searching architecture that we're working on should really bring Gnutella to a completely different level, giving you much better results while using far less bandwidth.

Thanks!

Adam,
"GUESS" sounds like a truly revolutionary Gnutella architecture enhancement!!!! However, it seems to me that your anticipated implementation timeframe of LW 3.0/several months out, is painfully too far away!!

I would think that the urgency of this enhancement is quite clear, due to the recent degradations in the Gnutella network! I'm hoping that without question, "GUESS" would be at the top of LimeWire's developers priority list!!!

Any chance development and release of this enhancement can be stepped up a bit?
