LimeWire 2.5.6 Leafs ? I just noticed some "Leaf" connections labeled "LimeWire 2.5.6" I've been checking practically daily..... since some quirks with 2.5.5 bother me. I checked the Beta web pages and they're still at 2.5.5. You guys have some pre-beta testers out there ? |

I'd stay at 2.5.4. More to lose than gain with 2.5.5, IMHO. Also, 2.5.6 (the real LW release) will be out someday soon, maybe. Nevertheless, it wont kill you to go to LW 2.5.5. |

my guess is it's FreeWire 2.5.6 http://download.com.com/3000-2166-10...ml?tag=lst-0-8 |

What's FreeWire ? Quote:
What is FreeWire? Is FreeWire: a) Simply a Re-Compile without ads (via Open Source) And therefore remaining in Sync with future LW releases? b) Or a new Branch of Source code, and therefore not likely to remain in Sync with future LW releases ? |

Yeah... What's up? Quote:
My curiosity is aroused also. |

my guess is: a) Simply a Re-Compile with ads AND parasiteware (via Open Source) And therefore remaining in Sync with future LW releases? From the CNet link I provided: Editor's note: This download includes additional applications that are bundled within the software's installer file, some of which may be provided by parties other than the developer of this download. These applications may deliver advertisements, collect information, overlay content or graphics on the Web site you are viewing, or modify your system settings. As with all downloads, CNET recommends that you pay close attention to the options presented to you during the installation process. Known third-party applications bundled with this download include SaveNow, n-Case, and UCmore. For more information, please read CNET News.com's report on bundled software http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-200-6759036.html you can remove most spyware with SpyBot Seek & Destroy P.S. (use at your own risk) |

Yeah, FreeWire basically just takes the LimeWire source code, makes minor cosmetic changes and re-releases it, making money off of the spyware. The real problem with FreeWire is that it doesn't contribute anything while it drains resources from LimeWire. So, to us, if you're interested in seeing Gnutella grow and become the network it can be, stick with LimeWire. If FreeWire starts actually contributing something to the open source effort, then it's different. But given that they're not currently doing so, right now they're just hurting open source and Gnutella. We've tried to contact them to actually cooperate on improving the LimeWire code base, benefitting both FreeWire and LimeWire, but they've consistently ignored my inquiries. It appears they prefer to just keep leaching off of our efforts and making money off ot it! Thanks for listening to that little rant =). |
