beta 2.6.0 available
 

We've released both the free and the pro versions of LimeWire 2.6.0 beta. It's available at:

This version includes the following:

- now connects to the network using GWebCache, a distributed connection system
- includes more statistics, such as showing the number of replies sent for files, the number of uploads for files, the number of alternate locations for files, and the user agent for uploads
- on Windows, we wrote a LimeWire exe launcher that dynamically searches for the most recent JVM available on your system each time you run it -- you will no longer have to re-install LimeWire when you install a new version of Java
- many important bug fixes, particularly to uploads and the installers
- LimeWire is now available in many new languages, including Italian, Catalan, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, simplified Chinese, and Swedish


We're also working on several really important projects for future releases, such as upload queuing and a new searching system that will improve overall search performance by several orders of magnitude.

Thanks guys -- it's all set now. The new installer is called "LimeWireOSX.zip" instead of "LimeWireOSX.sit."

Works ok. When I opened it though, it tries to get me to DL 2.5.5 because it is the "newer" version. Odd.

LimeWire uses now 2-3 times more cpu cycles on mac osx 10.2 than 2.5.5- which is bad. I restarted it but same results... probably a bug somewhere...
Another thing, at first launch the mp3 player buttons were aqua like, after a restart those buttons are the same as 2.5.5, weird.

more if needed later...

Remember that the first time you run the program, it will hash all files in your shared directory that it does not already have a hash for. Did you choose a new save directory and move files to it??

My bad. I knew I should have mentionned that all files had been hashed before my experiments.... anyway there is a cpu cycles problem on my computer. Next time I'll try to be more clear.

Just upgraded from 2.5.5 to 2.6.0 PRO. W2K, Java 1.4.0_1.

Not major - but I was asked to enter my preferences again and had to re-setup my options (isn't Limewire supposed to remember options?). No problem with the cached file hashes (it found them) and my current download queue (it is still there).

I note that the default port has changed back to 6346 - My previous default was 6347 although 2.5.5 did carry over settings from beta versions of 2.5. [This is largely irrelevant - but I found it interesting that the first clients to look for files must remember me from when I was previously 6346 (they are looking for files I had) - they were all bearshare].

media player died in 2.6.0 Pro
 

Well.... install of 2.6.0 Pro on WIN XP Pro went smoothly and most everything seems to be working well....

Except for....

The LimeWire media player is dead :( Not working at all... even though I have checked use LW player in options!

I had already posted the media player problem in a separate thread, but felt it should also be mentioned here.

Any thoughts?

afisk, Would you recommend that I get version 2.6.0 or wait for version 2.6.1 of LimeWire.:confused:

So far the only bug I've personally noticed in 2.6.0 Pro is the dead LimeWire Media Player... depends how important the player is to you.

Adam mentioned other bugs, but I haven't noticed.

I realize you asked Adam... but figured I'd throw in my 2 cents. ;)

1. the reference to the available beta is at the top of the page
2. the reference mentions what beta version is available

No, I didn't uninstall the previous version first. I'll watch what happens when I install 2.6.1 as soon as it is available.

Thanks for the responses. I'm about to put 2.6.1 up with a number of bugs fixed, including the media player issue. The other bugs were primarily on Mas OS 9.x and below.

Let me know, Treatid, on the preferences saving issue, as that would definitely be a concern.

Just installed 2.6.1. - It didn't pick up my settings again (and it prompted me to upgrade to 2.5.5).

Beta versions of 2.5 after 2.5.0 did manage to remember my settings (including 2.5.5). I haven't uninstalled and done a fresh install since before 2.5.0. (i.e. all installations have been done without removing the previous version).

On the plus side - 0KB/s uploads no longer seem to be a problem - thank you for that one.

This isn't new - I think it came in with the 2.5 versions - but when large downloads are completed (200MB+) they sometimes take a long time to complete after reaching 100%. This, in itself, isn't a problem, but it appears to interfere with other traffic - while the completed download is being processed, ultrapeers cannot be maintained and uploads and downloads are drastically slowed or dropped.

This isn't a lack of processor oomph - when I've checked, processor utilisation is nowhere near maximum. However, LimeWire itself is sluggish.

As far as I can tell, LimeWire is not this sluggish during the start-up hashing (I'm guessing that LimeWire is hashing the file once it has downloaded it).

I'm on a WIN XP Pro platform. I had installed 2.6.0 Pro over 2.5.5 Pro, settings & prefs OK.

and now, I installed 2.6.1 Pro over 2.6.0 Pro... and again, settings OK.

Are you guys using the default program folders? I haven't tried 2.6x yet but I had to re-do my settings with every 2.5x PRO version. I installed the program in the default location but then use a 2nd drive for the download and shared folders.

Yup.... Using the default locations and folders.

I install to the default location (c:\program files\Limewire) but use a second hard drive for the default save locations (and incomplete folder).

I'm using an administrator account (so it shouldn't be a permissions issue). Pro version of LimeWire.

Installing 2.6.0 over 2.5.5 created a new LimeWire icon on my desktop. Installing 2.6.1 over 2.6.0 replaced the 2.6.0 icon with a 2.6.1 icon (i.e. didn't add yet another desktop icon).

Well, based on our unscientific survey of the 3 of us, it appears that there's an installer bug. Rutro used all default folders and had no problem, while Treatid and I changed the download and shared folders and lose our settings every time we upgrade.
