1.9c changes the slider for the amount of bandwidth available for uploads, so that it bottoms out at 50% of the amount of bandwidth Limewire thinks is available.

Unfortunately for me, my DSL connection is viciously asymmetric, like 10:1 -- so I have *much* less upload bandwidth than Limewire seems to think based on the fact that I identified as having "DSL." And if I use up too much of this upstream bandwidth for uploads, then downloads also slow to a crawl (ACKs cant get through etc.)

In the old limewire, I could throttle uploads to 2-5% or so of Limewire's ridiculous overestimate of my capacity, and everything worked fine. Now, since I can only go down to 50%, I have no choice but to turn uploads off completely.

This unless Limewire will actually measure my upload bandwidth now and improve its estimate? Either way I think the slider should be allowed to go below 50%.

Thats stupid. Just set it where you can only have 2 simultaneous uploads at any given point. That shouldnt bog down your bandwidth at all. You'll just have to regulate how many uploads, downloads, and other traffic you have (gnutella, etc). Its not hard.

You don't understand. Limiting the number of downloads is not the solution. *A* *single* *upload* can easily max out my upstream bandwidth and make my large downstream bandwidth unusable (and indeed **** up gnutella message routing and everything else), unless I have the ability to squelch the amount of bandwidth that it uses. Limewire 1.9c has taken away this ability.

I've got the same problem with my DSL. I usually limit uploads to 5-8 kbps when I'm downloading. Anything more than that, and my downstream disappears. I can't even open simple web pages.

Unregistered: I sympathize with you, having DSL myself at home. The reason we crippled the upload throttling was because we believe many people are setting it to zero to disable uploads. (Hence 0.0KB/s transfers.) If they <i>really</i> want to do that--shame on them--they should just not share any files.

In LW 2.0, the throttle is limited to 25%. If you really want to set it lower, you can change the value of the UPLOAD_SPEED property in your limewire.props file, located wherever you installed LimeWire.

A longer term solution might be for Limewire to measure the amount of bandwidth that's actually available for uploads rather than coming up with some crazy estimate based on what radio button you click.
