Default 2.0.5 beta available

A beta version of LW 2.0.5 is now available for all platforms at http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/download_beta. The main goal of this release is to increase the horizon of leaf nodes. A second goal is to reduce confusion about leaf mode. New features:
<ul>
<li>ultrapeers don't decrement TTL of queries from leaf nodes. Hence connected leaves should see more results.
<li>ultrapeers have enforced KEEP_ALIVE of at least six. User is informed if he tries to set it too low. Also, user informed if he's a leaf node and tries to set the KEEP_ALIVE higher than 1.
<li>horizon size displayed as "?" for leaf to ultrapeer connections, since this data is not available
<li>user warned when enabling monitor in leaf mode, since there will be few incoming searches.
</ul>
Unfortunately this will not immediately increase YOUR horizon. What it will do is increase the horizon of leaves connected to you, if you're an ultrapeer. With time this will help the network greatly. However, we may release another beta shortly that will increase YOUR horizon right away. (I'll get coding shortly!)

As usual, this release is ad-supported. For Windows users, it has the same bundled software as 2.0.4: two desktop icons, and <b>optionally</b> Gator and Toptext. It has NO clicktilluwin or net2phone. If 2.0.5 goes live, we'll make an ad-free version for PRO users.

As usual, your help testing this release is most welcome. Please report any problems.

Post TTLs

Please explain the following settings: (limewire.props)

SOFT_MAX_TTL=7
MAX_TTL=16
TTL=7

Whats the difference? Can I modify these values to get better search results?

I like the interface improvements that explain why only one connection is kept up while in leaf mode. Also, the note on the Monitor tab could also prove valuable when people are used to seeing tons of searches pouring through their machines. By the way, where is the source? On LW.org, the 'latest build' is still stuck on 2.0.2. I realize that 2.0.4 is almost the same, but wouldn't it be a good idea to upload the newest source? Especially if 2.0.5 seems to be working well?

I have found something I don't understand. On the connections tab, while in leaf mode, why does the hosts entry say '?' instead of a number?

:-)

Unregistered: in practice, you can't really raise your TTL about 7 since other clients will "normalize" high TTLs.

TruStarWarrior: glad you like the GUI changes. The detailed reason for the "?" is that ultrapeers only pass unique pongs from other ultrapeers to leaf nodes. (Ultrapeers even pass pongs that wouldn't normally be routed to the leaf.) So the old leaf "horizon" was actually the number of unique pongs seen in the last N minutes--generally quite small, and never very useful!

anti-bearshare: the Linux/FreeBSD version is at http://www9.limewire.com/beta/2.0.2/...eWireLinux.tgz. Think we'd forget you?

As for the updating the "latest source" link on www.limewire.org: because we haven't automated that, we usually only update that after major releases. Besides, 2.0.5 may actually never make it into production, since we're nearly finished with a newer version that seems to solve the horizon problem instantly!

Lightbulb "As usual, this release is ad-supported. "

I purchases Pro, 2.0.2.

I'd be happy to test any beta, but not the ad-supported stuff (installer, etc)

If your beta's are only ad-supported, aren't you essentially ELIMINATING all your best users from the beta testing, where best means customers who have shown a willingness to pay?
