Arrow how can I keep my library up to date?

Hi there, I don't know if this is a tip & trick or whether I should go straight to the new features suggestion forum.

Basically, I'm looking for a way to keep my library up-to-date with what I have on disk.

I am a subsidiary user on someone else's machine--i.e I had to install limewire into my account from theirs because they are the admin and I don't have such privileges. So is it possible this may be why my library isn't updating to take account of deleted files?

I'm not having any problems deleting the spammy auto-generated stuff, for which I'm generally using either Limewire or a media manager that's provided on the system here; some stuff I'm pretty sure I have deleted, though, is still showing in my library despite it not being actually on disk any more.

I'm mainly sharing - and searching for - images, ebooks and suchlike rather than music and movies so please keep advice generic. And it seems it is the limewire library rather than any 3rd party viewing software that's persisting in registering stuff I've deleted--i.e. the thumbnails no longer register in my "playlist".

The thing is that I find it easier to do stuff at source and do my housekeeping using Windows. I prefer to, e.g., go in and change extension names manually once I've downloaded to ensure I see stuff through the viewer rather than keep triggering an image editing program startup.

What I'm wondering is whether it's something to do with the ultrapeer side of things?

Or is this something that I'm going to have to reluctantly get myself some kind of on-line payment handling arrangements set up (which I've been putting off almost as long as I put off getting a cellphone) in order to get the PRO version to solve?

Or should I get looking at the books on Java I picked up with a vague notion that, as I found JavaScript easy enough once I got going, I'd probably get round to teaching myself coding properly and try and write a auto-comparison routine for the refresh function? I don't know how long it might take, certainly at least a couple of weeks although I suspect it might take me that long to find the right bit of code in the OSS download.

OK, I shall stop waffling now and hope someone can work out what the question is before I get too much nearer to the big four oh.

thanks in advance

luthier

Not sure whether you're developing your own version but ...
Saved Files folder will normally reflect the immediately downloaded material. Shared folder may not get updated immediately. Either restart LW or use the Refresh button to update this immediately. If you have share downlded content immediately enabled then that should help keep the Saved Files folder up to date. But again, you may need to resort to using the Refresh button in the LW LIbrary window. Changing extensions or the file that handles a file for opening ... in my experience doesn't take effect until next time you open LW (eg: changing default program to open a file-type.)

Ah, nope. I've tried that. They seem to be persisting as far as my library goes whatever--although they're deleted off disk. I'll give it another scrutinising but the files I was referring to were persisting in displaying in my library after refresh, after restarting limewire. It's currently about 04:20 here and my eyes are tired, so I'll go back through it all after a couple hours kip and check that we both do indeed mean what I think we mean! Thanks for the quick turnaround on the reply though. While you're at it, have you any idea why I seem to be listed as a junior member after I'm sure I altered my profile to reflect my status as a grownup?

Aha, so, classic case of {set user "luthier"="true" AND proc "RTFM"="false"} there then. I'm surprised it isn't more intuitive on classifiaction, along the lines of GNUbie, GNUabitnow, GNanswerU.

Yeah, back to the thread a moment: the library issue seems to have cleared itself up now so maybe it's linked to the caching on this machine? Otherwise, I did try what you suggested in the first instance so your post seems to confirm I'm going about it the right way and have reasonable expectations of what the s/w does. On the other hand, old entries were still showing a good week or ten days after I'd deleted them.

No I'm not developing my own version—I thought it was all open source, albeit any mod's should be sent to the LW bods for potential inclusion. But, being a GNUbie...

I'm guessing that you share what you downloaded. Try going to Tools>Options>Sharing and remove all folders there. Then close Limewire. Open it again and add your folders again.

Limewire should then rehash the files. Refresh your library after number of shared files is green.

Yeah, I get where you're coming at on that one. I'm adding this for the benefit of other users as I tend to read "-->" as indicating cascading submenus, but I take it take once I'm in the sharing dialogue box I should highlight the various folders one by one and click on [remove].

I don't know if the PRO version's different but that's what I get on my screen using the LW basic.

But, yeah, that makes total sense. Thanks.

Any files or folder you "don't" wish to share, right-click upon them (whilst in Library window) & you will see option. If a file is not being shared it will become red in colour. A folder not being shared will simply disappear from the library from memory. There's no difference in interface between basic & pro.

lol . Remove it is, not delete. I was in a hurry and mixed up the two.

Never ever delete anything from the Limewire Library useless you want it totally gone. It does not go to the recycle bin. It really gets deleted.

I'll just edit my previous post
