From Modem to Router

Been away in Nightmare land configuring new wireless router to work with Limewire, read most of the tips, especially Lotr posts on setting up,after much frustration, tearing hair and eating innocent worksurfaces etc..finally it's working, clear globe etc... only thing Iv'e noticed is less ability to 'Browse' hosts and I still can't browse myself? as I used too. any ideas out there? why should my browse function be affected when nearly everything else is EVENTUALLY working?Other thing, windows Firewall is turning itself off after re-boot? I have got rid of Zone Alarm as not nec.(I never used windows firewall when I had ZAlarm) If Windows Firewall disabled, I have a sneaky feeling it's still operating !
Do I need it anyway? As I say when I enable it, it turns off when rebooted.Last point, are u any more 'exposed' as an ultrapeer? as u are 'behind' no one,Iv'e noticed most ultrapeers only have very small 'innocuous' files being shared??Is there a reason for this?
Any other people considering router route now have my deepest sympathy,GOOD LUCK !!:yahoo:
PS Should have said, people can upload and I can download, just cant browse.Only very occasionally
PPS Sorry if this is posted in wrong place ?HELP PLEASE !!
PPPS I have 'chat' enabled, was able to browse before changing to router, now almost impossible, will i just have to live with crippled lime wire? I read that browse is ''luck'' but it WAS working,,AAAARRRGGGHHH !!!!

Don't know all the answers, but I'll try:wink:.

I don't think your firewall is affecting your ability to browse other hosts. If the firewall icon isn't showing and you can d/l and u/l ok then your connection should be good. Don't know why XP's firewall won't start on reboot.

I rarely if ever can browse someone uploading files from me. Try browsing from your search results window. I have much more success browsing that way.

Not sure what you mean by being more exposed being an UP. If you mean exposed to the authorities, I'm not sure, but your isp can track what your doing reguardless.

One reason that UP's tend to have fewer files(though not necessarily) is LW picks hosts who have the extra bandwidth available to be an UP. So hosts with less files tend not to be uploading much so they have more spare bandwidth. So more likely to be an UP.

Hope this helps, though I'd pay to see someone eat their own head :D.

Thanks 6pac for trying to answer, windows firewall still turning itself off after every reboot, Browsing issue ,cant browse self(Using direct connect and entering own address) exposure as an ultrapeer, ie as you are not behind an ultrapeer therefore more' exposed' would still like to know.
Many thanks on browsing,I cant browse from either 'connections' window or 'Search' window or 'Download' window, will continue trying.
Many thanks,

Browsing

Many thanks birdy for info, removing lw folder did work and i browsed away like a demented cow, sorry (Bovine) for a couple of hours, started comp today, lo and behold, browsing doesnt work again !! Would messing with protocols by Ser.Prov. be a factor?? I am throttled at present? but feel like doing the throttling !!!!!!:bangh:Is it worth deleting folder again, does it matter if you do this frequently? Thanks Newbee2

AFAIK you can delete the prefs folder whenever you like. But if you're continually having to do that there must be another problem somewhere, plus it's a PITA:wink:

Have you tried starting from scratch & reinstalling Java then LW (both with their offline installers)?

I've got no idea why your XP firewall would be turning off & on. I couldn't find a single thing about this with Google. Are you sure that every bit of ZA is gone? Have you tried using the computer's search to see if there are any ZA files or folders still hanging around? Just that I was wondering if somehow the ZA uninstall didn't work & somehow it's still trying to turn off your XP firewall (that's a real stab in the dark & is probably way off base:o)

It's probably a good idea to run an AV scan too, just to see if there are any nasties around.

as a guess, your firewall issue is caused by a remenant of ZA still affecting your system. I know for a fact the SpyBot Search & Destroy detects the 'hacks' Norton products do in regards to security notifications, perhaps Spybot will detect the ZA 'hacks'...e.g. download Spybot, install it, update it, and then run it

Thanks Birdy and Peerless, yup uninstall done ,(so well I now cant reinstall ZAlarm!)
But now, YES, Windows FWall is STAYING ON,You were right, odds and sods left on the system.
Like the old joke about the Buddist going to the burger stall and saying'' Make me one with everything '' Perehaps Peace will reign for a while, after all IT's ONLY A MACHINE !! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH !
Thankyou ALL,

for any others trying to uninstall ZAlarm,it leaves behind'True Vector Service',in bits in Windows sys.32 files, true vector is the part that monitors internet, so now I realise why it was interferring with Windows FWall !!! This bit can also muck up re-install of Zalarm,Basically a right PAIN !! Thanks for tip on Sygate, have to be quick tho' bought out by semantec and is withdrawn from many download sites (found out today):Smilywais:
