Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted. Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender. Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration. The Rules 1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Please choose the correct section for your problem. 7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online. 10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents. 11. Ports and Stuff I've just upgraded to the fastest DSL offered by Bellsouth which has the following max speeds: Download: 6.0 mbps Upload: 512 kbps Have also configured the router for ports 30000-65000 but am not sure which port to set LW on-which one in that range is the best for fastest results and downloads? Also would like to know what would be the highest number for maximum downloads. And, one more thing; would the speeds listed above be considered T1 or T3? Please keep me posted (Opinions welcome and appreciated) Andrew Perkins |

1. What speeds are T1/T3, etc. for LW, ___ 2. More on LW connection speeds ___ 3. What is a T1? No specific best port. Whatever port works & is free. Ports 49152 or higher are the least likely to be blocked or shaped by ISP's & are not officially used for other purposes. Without rechecking the links, if i were you, I'd set myself up for T3. I have a similar upload speed but if I set myself up for T3, then there's issues with setting maximum upload speed. Ideally you'd like to set free some bandwidth for browsing, etc. BTW my download speed plan is 24 Mhz, but I get less than 4 Mhz due to line speed issues. (ie: the line/cable/wires the connection runs thru is not designed to cope with faster. They are slowish upgrading all lines around here. Besides that, speed losses are also due to distance from supplier, losses over connection equipment, line hops over ISP's & possibly those that shape, etc.) |

Hi Magic I just want to make one point that ISPs never seem to tell their customers and that is the speed you sign up for is, in most cases, not the speed you get. For example, I originally signed up last year for 16MB download speed however, I recently found out that my telephone exchange (sorry, I don't know what you call them outside of the UK) is not capable of handling 16MB, it can only handle 8MB. Now, I live about half-a-mile from my exchange and, on a good day, my top download speed is 5.0xMB. A work colleague of mine who lives 5 to 10 minutes (walk) away from his exchange gets a max download speed of 5.8MB. The point I'm making is that, on the whole, very few people actually get what they think they signing up for. So don't be too disappointed if you find out that the 6.0MB download speed you signed up for really turns out to be between 3 to 4MB. In the meantime, you may want to read this article: BBC NEWS | Technology | Broadband speeds under scrutiny Now, what I have said and the article may not apply to you because you are in a different part of the world but you usually find that ISPs are multi-nationals and if they can get away with dodgy practices in one country they will certainly try it in another. Uk Bob, thanks for the heads up; it's true-just because it says 6.0 doesn't mean that's what you'll get every time. With the setup I have there's a color coded system which shows the range for each of the four packages that are offered. Also, I've just heard that there are much faster download and upload speeds in Europe and Asia-it makes ours look like a snail in comparison. I'm sure people here are a little irked to see that the overseas market has advanced by leaps and bounds. At any rate, the fastest speeds available from Bellsouth/AT&T are 6.0 Mbps and 512 kbps. I'm sure that there will be advances but they may take years to implement here as we are so far behind. On another note, I am wondering what would be the highest number for the maximum simultaneous download that would work best for my T3 setup. Keep me posted (all opinions welcome and appreciated) Andrew Perkins |
