Default Limewire 4.0.8 crashing/Internet connection failiure

Hello! I am using Limewire 4.0.8 Pro on a Mac G4 --Panther 10.3.5 with a cable connection. I've had a lot of problems with Limewire crashing my mac upon start up. I've tried many things including turning off Norton Firewall (and then later uninstalling it), and deleting a lot of the files in the Incomplete folder (where I had a lot of them) and nothing worked. I would loose internet connection (browser won't work when it's normally working before starting LW) a minute after starting LW and then my system would freeze. I finally removed the Incomplete folder out of the LW. I was able to get a good connection in LW and my system stopped crashing but sometimes I loose internet connection from Safari but LW would still be connected!! Safari never screws up when LW is not connected. Any solution to these problems? I still have the old Incomplete folder where I have a lot of almost-done-downloading files. Can I still use them in trying to complete the download?
I tried going to http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest and I am getting a decent connection (455/207).
Also, I couldn't find the TOOLS-OPTIONS in the application.

Hi Alexandre

TOOLS/OPTIONS are called Preferences and are where'd you expect on OS X (under the LimeWire menu). Reduce the upload settings to ~85% of your connection speed, and that should take care of the 'freezes' on startup.

set Upload Bandwidth setting to 22KB/s which is 207/8*.85 to get the your KB setting.

btw--sounds like too many connections were causing a "freeze" not a crash (unless a crash report popped up). Whatever, it's time for a safe boot to make sure the system is OK. Just restart the machine and hold down the shift key, then restart normally.

Once you're happy with how LW is operating, quit and replace the new Incomplete folder with the old, and it should resume many of those almost complete files normally. Delete the 0KB files to cut down on the number of unecessary connections that are swamping your machine.

Cheers

Thanks for your reply, Stief!
I tried what you have recommended and I am still having problems. The only option was to completely discard the old Incomplete folder. I tried moving the incomplete files individually and placed them in the new Inc. folder--hoping that they would pick up at some point, but that didn't work.
I set my Upload to the absolute minimum but I still get an obstruction when I try to use my browser (while LW is still working). Quite often the computer simply freezes.
What is the best way to delete files is it from the incomplete folder that is found in the Library in the open application? Or in the actual LW folder?
Very often files would have te enigmatic "Awaiting Resourses" for ever and ever and not started downloading. Any input on this? Thanks.

Hi again Alexandre

sorry to hear you are still having problems--the safe boot and upload throttle should have done the trick.

Incomplete files can't be resumed without the index--stored in the downloads.dat file and backed up with the downloads.bak file. So if you move the incomplete folder, dragging out individual files won't work. You're right that the best way to handle bad incompletes is just to delete them from within the Library. Generally it's best not to try messing with incompletes (voice of past failures ).

I still think there's something wrong at the system level though.

For awaiting sources, just control-click the search tab and choose "repeat search"

Hello! Cntrl + click tab, now that's a goodie I never knew about. How would one know about such short cuts?
I ran TechTool Pro, Disk Utility, and Norton. The system is fine and everything is running smoothly.

Finding out about the shortcuts is really erratic: the documentation couldn't keep up with the development

The TOTD in the Help menu might say something about it. Otherwise, browse http://www.limewire.com/english/cont..._history.shtml

cheers--glad all is well.

Hi again! I wish I can say all is well. LW still sucks all of the internet connection! I really would like to solve this.

I tried deleting files from the library but they reappeared again when I quit and started the application again. The best way was to delete them from the LW incomplete folder on th HD.

Stief may disagree with this, but either reduce your uplds further or change your connection type setting in LW (ie: LW Prefs>Speed.) But try the 1st suggstion 1st.

Default Crashes are just a part of this software

I once got LWPro 4.08 to run for 36 hrs. but that is a record. The usual length of time is about 1.5 hours. The program is very memory hungry and uses over 80% of my 1.5MB ram on a 1.25 GHz PowerMac. The program is very slow to react to clicks and keyboard entries. I suspect that the overhead of Java eats up so many machine cycles that the processor/memory can't keep up. I think that optimization for the displayed page would help but that doesn't seem to be happening yet.

Me Lord,

The connection is now set to 56K, the upload throttle is at the lowest, the incomplete folder is almost empty and only few files are downloading and my internet connection is still hogged by LW and leaving absolutely nothing available for Safari. Sometimes even causing a spinning beach wheel to surface and spin eternally.

I ran all sorts of utility tests on my system and everything seems to be functioning perfectly until I start LW.

Any remedy to this? Am I the only user experiencing such problems?

Alexandre
