Question help Lord of the Rings "The application Limewire has unexpectantly quit"

i posted the thread below in another section of the forum and it might not have gotten the best exposure. according to members of this board you seem to be the wealth of knowledge.

"The application Limewire has unexpectantly quit"

that's the result i get when i try and launch it.

when i first installed it it worked great - then while running it my comp crashed. after rebooting i tried to launch Limewire and got the error message in this threads subject.

i deleted and reinstalled many times now and i get the same thing.

i'm running a mini mac with OSX - all software/java etc is updated.
what am i doing wrong?

if i need to uninstall java is it as simple as just going into utilities and dumping the folder?

which version do i reinstall? sorry but i'm new to all this.

thanks in advance.

Sometimes a simple Repairing of Permissions can fix this. Try the following out one by one to see if one fixes it:
1. See SAFE Boot & Repair Permissions & see if this works.

2. If not, delete your LW Prefs folder (whilst LW is closed!!!) found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

3. Download & install the Standalone Java installer: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...update142.html

4. Double-click the harddrive icon, open the Library, open the Receipts folder, then find the file: Install LimeWire.pkg & delete it and try again.

1) - how do i know when i'm safe mode? nothing looks different as far as i can tell. should it?

2) - when i get to the disk utility and check the left column i have two choices

a) 74.5 GB Toshiba MK-80
b) Macintosh HD

which one do i select? both?

A second after you choose Restart, hold down the SHIFT key & keep it held down until you see on the screen 'booted in Safe mode' (or something to that effect.) Then repair permissions. You can only repair permissions on a HDD with OSX installed on it. Whilst you're there choose Repair disk for the other. (You can only repair permissions for osx so to repair disk for OSX you'd need to start up with start up disk.) Do you have any other 3rd party OSX utilities by the way like DiskWarrior or Norton Utilities? Worth having around in case of problems. Norton fixed my external HDD.

By the way nothing looks different after a safe boot. And for me a Safe boot seems to take a little longer than a normal restart.

no effect/same results.

in the meantime i downloaded 'Poisoned - giFT' just to see if i'd have any luck with another P2P.

it tries to launch and then i get this prompt...

"You seem to be having a problem with the gift daemon launching or crashing"

and then of course it's game over again.

cripes what did i do? i mean i'm new to mac but i'm not a complete maroon.

frustrating.

Have a look at some of these fixes: icon bouncing in Dock (click on link) Some of these are a bit radical.

1. (a) Make sure you have the most recent version of Java. (b) Try the Standalone Java installer because installing over the net can cause side fx.

not sure what to do here? do i have to delete my current version of java and then load the standalone? if so is it just a matter of dropping the java file into the trash? i tried installing it with out deleting it and it wouldn't let me

2. Do a (a) Safe Mode start & (b) Repair Permissions, & then check with (c) Disk Utility & fsck, & if necessary run all other mac & 3rd party utilities (eg: DiskWarrior, Norton Utilities & AV, TechTool Pro) on your computer.

tried - no effect

3. Uninstall LW completely (do a complete search to make sure you have trashed every single LW item incl. prefs. - though you could move the incomplete files including download.dat & bak somewhere else temporarily.) Then reinstall.

i tried my best with this one - removed it from desk top / applications and utilities. how would i search for more?

4. Try out the LW Beta version (Pro users will find download link at bottom of their personal dwnld page)

did this - no change

5. Install in a new admin user account to isolate a home account problem

did this - then downloaded LW and tried to install. when i hit the install "lime button" it does it's little animation like it's about to install then does nothing. does it's little dance each time i click it but that's it.

6. Go back to earlier version of LW until a new update comes out.

doesn't seem to be an early version for OSX on the site anymore

7. (a) Be radical & start completely over by reinstalling OSX & updates & then LW (as last resort only.) (b) Else, & probably 'preferable' is to install the Apple Combo Standalone installer. Updating over the net can sometimes cause issues so using a standalone installer & in one installation hit such as the combo seems to overcome some of those issues.

haven't tried this - what's best way to do this? makes me a little nervous

8. Try the Jum Build which is a beta (more experimental than the regular LW beta) but easier to install.

won't let me download it for some reason

The OS 10.3.8 Combo installer is the way to go then! http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...1038combo.html
It seems to fix all problems that the Java installation can't fix. But you never did tell us your os version so I hope you're using 10.3 If not post back.
